, KUALASIMPANG– The Sustainable Forest Advocacy Institute (LembAHtari) reminds the government to stop the continuation of the Lesten (Gayo Lues) to Pulautiga (Aceh Tamiang) main road construction.
This long-term project played a significant role in the flash floods that occurred in Aceh Tamiang on November 26th.
“Gayo Lues is the headwaters of the Tamiang Langsa River Basin. The commitment of the two regencies, between the Government of Gayo Lues and the Government of Aceh Tamiang, to open up isolated areas – this slogan became the icon to push for road construction,” said LembahTari Executive Director, Sayed Zainal, Sunday (12/14/2025).
It is known that the Aceh Tamiang Regency Government has signed an MoU with the Gayo Lues Regency Government, which was signed in the Bappeda Aceh Tamiang Hall on October 21, 2025.
The road’s pores emphasize forest areas that have long served as a buffer for environmental sustainability and ecosystems for several regencies in Aceh.
The impact of the road construction, which seemed too forced, necessitated the felling of thousands of trees.
“Who guarantees that deforestation, illegal logging, and land encroachment will not occur. Look today, Aceh Tamiang was hit by a flash flood, devastated, ruined, which is an ecological disaster,” he said. (*)
