According to data from the United States Postal Service (USPS), an alarming number of packages were stolen from American homes last year, with figures exceeding 58 million. With the current holiday season alone expected to see over seven billion packages delivered, law enforcement agencies, including those in Columbus, are strongly urging residents to adopt proactive measures to safeguard their purchases.
A Personal Account of Holiday Theft
The frustration and disappointment of package theft were vividly shared by Jason Kuhn, who recounted his experience to our news partners at WBNS-TV. Kuhn discovered that a package containing a Christmas gift for his wife had been stolen from his porch overnight.
“Now we’ve got to worry about things disappearing,” Kuhn lamented. He explained that the theft occurred in the early morning hours, and they didn’t immediately notice the missing package until they retrieved what they thought was their delivery, only to find it empty. This prompted them to review their security footage.
The footage from Kuhn’s Ring doorbell captured a clear image of the perpetrator. The thief was seen wearing what appeared to be an Amazon vest and, disturbingly, swapped Kuhn’s actual delivery with an empty box. The stolen item was a watch holder intended as a Christmas present for his wife.
The incident not only resulted in the loss of a gift but also created a cascade of inconveniences. “The Christmas gift was a watch holder for my wife for Christmas, and then she had to spill the beans on what it was because we’re going to have to file a claim with Etsy,” Kuhn explained, highlighting the added stress of dealing with claims and potential loss of funds. He poignantly summarized the emotional toll, stating, “The Grinch stole the surprise and the Christmas gift.”
In response to the theft, Kuhn promptly reported the incident to Etsy and indicated his intention to also file a report with the Columbus police.
