Shane Warne’s Extraordinary Gesture for Ed Sheeran’s Father
Shane Warne, the legendary Australian spin bowler, was renowned not only for his mastery on the cricket pitch but also for his generous spirit and ability to connect with people from all walks of life. His son, Jackson Warne, recently shared a touching anecdote that highlights the late cricketer’s remarkable kindness, revealing an act that brought immense joy to the father of international music sensation Ed Sheeran.
Warne, affectionately known as the “King of Spin,” captivated audiences worldwide with his exceptional bowling talent, taking an impressive 708 Test wickets during his illustrious career. His untimely passing in 2022 left a significant void in the cricketing fraternity and the hearts of fans globally.
During his extensive commentary engagements, Warne forged friendships with numerous prominent figures, including the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. Speaking on the “Ausmerican Aces” podcast, Jackson Warne recounted the humble beginnings of his father’s acquaintance with Sheeran, which unfolded during a visit to Melbourne.
An Unexpected Encounter
“Ed came to Melbourne for the first time, I think 2013,” Jackson recalled. The initial meeting occurred serendipitously at Crown Towers, where Warne was staying.

“When Dad was staying at Crown, he walked into like, the Crown Villas and there was two big security guards,” Jackson explained. Warne, noticing the unusual presence of security, expressed a slight sense of bewilderment. “Dad said ‘this is a bit strange, they’re not normally here’.”
Shortly after returning to his room, Warne received a knock on his door. The two security guards informed him that someone wished to meet him. “They said ‘excuse me Mr Warne, I’ve got someone that would like to meet you’,” Jackson recounted.
Upon asking for the identity of his visitor, Warne was met with the name “Ed Sheeran.” At the time, Warne, perhaps surprisingly to some, admitted, “Dad’s like ‘Who’s that?’.” His daughter, Brooke, who was present, quickly clarified, “God, Dad, that’s the singer, he’s here in Melbourne doing a concert.”
The security guard then extended an invitation for Sheeran to visit Warne in his room, to which Warne readily agreed.
A Few Hours of Conversation and Connection
What followed was a relaxed and personal encounter. “It was just Ed by himself with a guitar,” Jackson said.

The conversation flowed easily, developing into a genuine connection. “It was just a completely normal conversation … he stayed in the room for a few hours. They were just talking about life, they just had a really good relationship after that.” This initial meeting laid the foundation for a lasting friendship.
Fulfilling a Father’s Dream
The bond between Warne and Sheeran deepened over time, with Warne often visiting England. It was during one of these occasions that Ed Sheeran approached Warne with a special request, centred around his father, who was an ardent cricket enthusiast and a devoted admirer of Shane Warne.
“But then every time Dad would go to England, Ed’s Dad, No.1 cricket fan of all time,” Jackson elaborated. “Loved cricket and his favourite player was Dad, just obsessed with him.”
Ed Sheeran then orchestrated a unique opportunity for his father. “So Ed organised a day and he said ‘excuse me Shane, it’s my Dad’s dream to just face an over from you. Can you just make his dream come true?’.” Warne, ever the sportsman with a generous heart, immediately agreed. “‘Of course mate’,” he replied.
An Unforgettable Batting Experience
The ensuing event proved to be an incredibly memorable experience for the Sheeran family. Warne, without any prior warm-up, dedicated a significant amount of time to fulfilling this special request.
“He ended up bowling to Ed Sheeran’s Dad for two hours,” Jackson revealed. The physical exertion was considerable. “He said his shoulder was cooked after it, no warm up.”
However, the effort was immensely rewarding for Warne. “But Dad said to see Ed’s Dad’s face just like amazed every single time … and Dad was doing all of them [his deliveries].” The joy and excitement on the face of Ed Sheeran’s father, as he faced deliveries from his idol, were palpable.
“Ed and his Dad were like just like ‘this is the coolest thing ever’,” Jackson added, underscoring the profound impact of Warne’s gesture.
