China, a nation with a deep-seated cultural affinity for gold, traditionally sees the metal purchased to commemorate significant life events such as births and weddings. However, the current market dynamics have shifted the narrative from acquisition to liquidation.

As gold prices recently touched a new peak, nearing US$5,600 on Thursday, the scene at a prominent Shanghai mall was one of eager anticipation. Consumers gathered around a conspicuous, brightly coloured machine, an innovation by the gold trading firm Kinghood Group, all with the singular aim of selling their gold.
One such individual, a 54-year-old woman identified as Wu, expressed her astonishment at the dramatic price escalation. “I never thought prices would rise so dramatically,” she stated, explaining her intention to sell panda-themed gold coins. These coins were a special purchase made years ago, following the birth of her daughter in 2002.
Wu shared a past experience with the same recycling machine, recounting how she had previously sold a ring inherited from her late father. The transaction yielded approximately 10,000 yuan (around $1,400), a remarkable return compared to the modest 1,000 yuan her mother had originally paid for it decades prior. An advertisement displayed on the machine itself reinforced the prevailing sentiment: “Gold prices hold steady at a historic high, it’s the right time to sell gold.”
The technological sophistication of these machines was evident. An integrated screen provided real-time updates on the fluctuating prices from the Shanghai Gold Exchange. Complementing this, a live video feed offered a transparent view of the process: a robotic arm precisely weighing gold scraps and a specialized device employing light waves to meticulously determine its purity.
The demand was so high that some individuals reported waiting for over an hour to have their turn. An attendant diligently managed the queue, assisting sellers in depositing various gold items – from ornate pendants and hammered rings to commemorative coins – into the machine’s designated slot.
Wu also highlighted the enthusiasm of her elderly mother, who was particularly thrilled by the soaring gold prices. The recycling machine presented an opportunity for her mother to supplement her modest pension, a prospect that brought a significant emotional uplift. “Everyone is suddenly talking about (gold), and it has sparked this emotion in her,” Wu remarked.
Unearthing Family Legacies
Among the sellers was a woman named Zhao, adorned with a gold medallion featuring intricate carvings and a necklace of jade beads, complemented by shimmering bangles on her wrist. She had brought her late grandfather’s ring to the recycling machine, a piece imbued with familial history.

The ring itself was a testament to traditional craftsmanship, its surface embellished with the Chinese character signifying “luck” and miniature depictions of classic gold ingots. Zhao estimated that her grandfather had acquired the ring sometime between the 1950s and the 1980s, and it had been passed down to her by her mother earlier in the year. “If the price is good, I will sell it,” she expressed her anticipation as she waited for her turn.
The transaction was swift and efficient. Shortly after Zhao deposited the ring, the machine’s screen displayed Kinghood’s offer: over 12,000 yuan for the high-karat gold. Zhao, satisfied with the valuation, readily accepted the terms, entering her personal and banking details. The live video feed captured the moment her grandfather’s ring was transformed into a smooth, molten puddle. The attendant assured her that the full payment would be processed via bank transfer by the end of the day.
Zhao voiced her confidence in the automated system, contrasting it with traditional methods. “Other places test the gold by burning it slightly, but here they test it directly and it’s open and transparent,” she explained, emphasizing her trust in the machine’s impartial and clear process over that of a human buyer.
Spectacle of Wealth
The automated gold recycling machine was not just a point of transaction but also a source of fascination for mall-goers. Onlookers were captivated by the substantial sums of money being exchanged for what were once personal keepsakes.
One passerby expressed sheer amazement upon witnessing an individual sell old jewellery for upwards of 75,000 yuan. The spectacle intensified as a crowd gathered around an elderly couple whose seemingly modest, finger-sized gold bar was assessed by the machine to be worth over 122,000 yuan, underscoring the immense value held within these once-dormant assets.
