Overnight Barrages Leave Ukrainian Cities Devastated

A series of intense Russian missile and drone attacks pummelled various regions across Ukraine overnight, resulting in a tragic loss of life and widespread destruction. Ukrainian authorities confirmed on Tuesday morning that at least 18 people had been killed and dozens more injured as emergency services scrambled to assess the damage.

In the capital city of Kyiv, residents were jolted awake by multiple explosions that ignited fires in several districts. By late Tuesday morning, the death toll in Kyiv had tragically climbed to six, with 66 individuals sustaining injuries. Tymur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv’s city military administration, reported via Telegram that the attacks were carried out using ballistic missiles. Local media captured harrowing scenes of residents fleeing to shelters, clutching essential belongings as a massive plume of smoke billowed from the city centre.

Earlier, the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, issued a stark warning: “Explosions in the city!” He urged citizens to “Stay in shelters!” while confirming that air defence forces were actively engaged. The attacks also led to power outages in several parts of the Ukrainian capital.

The carnage extended beyond Kyiv. Simultaneously, a Russian assault on the city of Dnipro claimed the lives of four people. By late Tuesday morning, this number had tragically risen to at least 12 fatalities, with 37 people injured. Oleksandr Hanzha, the local governor, reported that the enemy attack had “claimed the lives of 4 people,” including a 73-year-old woman. He later updated the number of wounded in the overnight strike on Dnipro to 16. By Tuesday afternoon, Hanzha confirmed that twenty-two of the injured remained hospitalised. Their injuries were severe, described as shrapnel wounds, fractures, lacerations, cuts, blast injuries, and acoustic trauma.

Eastern City Also Targeted

The eastern city of Kharkiv also bore the brunt of the attacks. In the Slobidsky district, eight people were wounded, according to regional governor Oleh Syniehubov.

Warning of Escalation Preceded Attacks

These latest devastating strikes follow a chilling warning issued by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy just days prior, who cautioned that Russia was preparing for a “massive new strike” on the nation.

“We have intelligence information about Russia preparing a new massive strike,” Zelenskyy stated on Friday, imploring citizens to “protect your lives.” He emphasised the importance of heeding air raid alerts and assured the public that Ukrainian defence services, including the Air Force, were on constant 24/7 duty.

President Zelenskyy has consistently appealed to international allies for the supply and funding of Patriot missile systems, crucial for intercepting Russian ballistic missiles. He had previously written to US President Donald Trump and the US Congress, requesting these vital defence systems to counter the escalating Russian aerial assaults. These pleas come at a time when US-brokered peace negotiations have stalled, with Washington’s focus and resources currently diverted to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Ukraine Responds with Counter-Strikes

In a retaliatory move against the relentless Russian bombardments, Ukraine has also intensified its strikes on occupied territories and within Russia itself. A Ukrainian drone attack reportedly killed one person in Russia’s Kursk region, close to the Ukrainian border, as confirmed by regional governor Alexander Khinshtein.
