Media Mogul Steps Down Amidst Serious Assault Allegations, Enters Rehab
A prominent figure in Australia’s media landscape, Antony Catalano, co-owner and chairman of Australian Community Media (ACM), has stood down from his executive role following serious assault charges. The allegations, which surfaced on Friday, involve an alleged violent incident in Melbourne that has sent shockwaves through the industry and prompted Catalano to seek immediate professional help.
Catalano is accused of dragging a woman through an apartment and allegedly swinging a clothes iron at her head. The alleged victim reportedly sustained a fractured tailbone and required hospitalisation following the incident, as detailed in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.
The charges laid against Catalano include assault, false imprisonment, and making threats to kill. In the wake of these accusations, ACM has placed him on an indefinite leave of absence from his chairmanship.
Acknowledging the Allegations and Seeking Help
In a personal statement released through an ACM-owned publication, The Canberra Times, Catalano expressed deep shame and humiliation over his alleged actions. He acknowledged the distress caused to the woman involved, his family, friends, colleagues, and the wider network connected to the businesses he leads.
Catalano candidly admitted to struggling with significant mental health and substance abuse issues, stating that those close to him had been urging him to seek professional assistance for some time. He revealed that interventions by family and friends had been attempted previously, but he had not yet acted on them.
“In light of recent events, I have now accepted that I need help and I will be checking myself into a rehabilitation program immediately,” Catalano stated. He further announced his intention to take a six-month leave of absence from all professional responsibilities to focus entirely on his treatment and recovery.
Company’s Response and Values
Australian Community Media (ACM) issued its own statement on Sunday, with a spokesperson expressing the board’s shock and deep concern regarding the allegations. The company emphasised that while the legal proceedings will determine the facts, violence against women is fundamentally at odds with the core values of ACM and its various mastheads.
The ACM spokesperson assured stakeholders that Catalano’s absence would not impact the daily operations of the company, clarifying that his role as executive chairman was non-operational.
Bail Conditions and Legal Proceedings
During a court appearance on Friday, police had argued for Catalano to be remanded in custody, citing an unacceptable risk of further offending and the possibility of him fleeing Victoria. However, Catalano’s barrister, Jason Gullaci SC, presented a defence highlighting his client’s status as a father of nine, his unblemished criminal record, and his substantial property and business interests.
Gullaci also pointed out that certain details, such as the specific allegation of the clothes iron being forcefully swung at the woman’s head, were not included in the written police summary.
Ultimately, Magistrate Rohan Lawrence granted Catalano’s release on bail, subject to a series of strict conditions. The case has been adjourned and is scheduled to resume on May 11. This development marks a significant turning point for Catalano, as he embarks on a journey towards treatment and recovery while facing serious legal charges.
