From NRL Enforcer to Boxing Contender: Nelson Asofa-Solomona Eyes Big Fights
The boxing world is buzzing with the potential of Nelson Asofa-Solomona, the former Melbourne Storm powerhouse who has transitioned from the rugby league field to the boxing ring with explosive results. Australian promotion company No Limit is strategically positioning the towering Kiwi as the next big crossover star, and already, prominent names from the rugby league fraternity are being mentioned as potential future opponents.
Asofa-Solomona inked a deal with No Limit last year, a move that saw him walk away from the final year of his lucrative NRL contract with the Storm. His debut for the promotion was nothing short of spectacular, delivering a stunning first-round knockout against rugby league cult hero Jeremy Latimore in a brutal display of his power.
His next outing is scheduled for Easter Sunday, where he’s set to face off against Jarrod Wallace on the undercard of the Tim Tszyu vs. Denis Nurja event in Wollongong. This bout holds particular significance as Asofa-Solomona and Wallace, both former NRL hardmen, have a history. They previously met in a 2023 exhibition match that was stopped in the third round after Asofa-Solomona put Wallace on the canvas.
While Asofa-Solomona is focused on the challenge presented by Wallace in their upcoming April 5 showdown, his gaze is clearly fixed on the horizon and the significant opportunities that lie ahead.
No Limit Boss Hypes Up Asofa-Solomona’s Future Prospects
George Rose, the head of No Limit and a former NRL front-rower himself, has been vocal about the exciting future envisioned for the two-time premiership winner. Rose emphasised Asofa-Solomona’s hunger for genuine competition and his desire to face elite athletes who possess the self-belief to challenge him.
“Nelson is still right at the beginning of his boxing career but he has made it clear he wants real challenges,” Rose stated. “He wants elite athletes who genuinely believe they can beat him and that is the mentality you need if you want to go somewhere in this sport.”
Rose highlighted the immense impact of Asofa-Solomona’s knockout victory over Jeremy Latimore, noting the incredible buzz it generated. He believes Asofa-Solomona has effectively carved out his own niche within the boxing landscape, a development that is resonating strongly with fans.
“The buzz from his enormous knockout of Jeremy Latimore was incredible. He effectively created his own NRL division and it’s something fans are getting around.”
Regarding the upcoming bout, Rose commented on Wallace’s toughness and the importance of such opponents for Asofa-Solomona’s development. “Jarrod Wallace is next up and is one tough hombre. It’s exactly the kind of opponent Nelson needs as he continues to learn and improve.”
Potential Showdowns with Rugby League Legends
Looking beyond his immediate opponent, Rose revealed that Asofa-Solomona has specific targets in mind for future bouts. One name that has been mentioned is George Burgess, particularly after an incident where Burgess allegedly confronted Asofa-Solomona in front of his family.
“George Burgess is on his hit list after he confronted him in front of his family. Nelson didn’t like the moment being taken away. George is a massive human.”
Another prominent figure on the radar is Paul Gallen, a seasoned veteran of the crossover boxing scene. Rose acknowledged Gallen’s instrumental role in establishing the current landscape for such fights and indicated that a bout with Asofa-Solomona is a distinct possibility if Gallen remains keen.
“Then there’s my old mate Gal. He helped build the crossover fight scene Nelson now sits in. It’s up to Gal really, I know Nelson is keen. If he still has the drive to compete that is definitely a conversation I would be open to having because he brings experience, credibility and intensity that Nelson needs if he’s going to be taken seriously going forward.”
Paul Gallen, with a professional boxing record of 16 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw, is undoubtedly one of Australia’s most recognised crossover attractions. His boxing career began while he was still playing for the Cronulla Sharks, and he has since participated in some of the nation’s most high-profile bouts against formidable opponents such as Barry Hall, Sonny Bill Williams, and Mark Hunt. Although Gallen had previously suggested that his victory over Sonny Bill Williams last year would mark the end of his boxing journey, the prospect of a fight against Asofa-Solomona, coupled with a potential No Limit payday, could very well entice him out of retirement.
In contrast to Gallen, George Burgess has yet to step into the professional boxing ring.
Another name that was previously floated as a potential opponent for Asofa-Solomona was Curtis Scott. However, this prospect appears to have been sidelined following Scott’s recent legal troubles, which led to his arrest on alleged assault charges.
