Australia’s Nicola Olyslagers Claims Silver in High Jump at World Athletics Indoor Championships
Australia’s two-time defending champion, Nicola Olyslagers, has secured a silver medal in the women’s high jump at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland. This achievement marks another significant milestone in her career, as she continues to demonstrate her dominance on the global stage.
Olyslagers, who previously claimed the world indoor title in 2024 and 2025, cleared a height of 1.99 metres during the competition. Her performance was so impressive that she shared the silver medal with Serbia’s Angelina Topić and Ukraine’s Yuliia Levchenko. The competition was fiercely contested, with four athletes managing to clear 1.99 metres on their first attempt—a rare feat that Olyslagers acknowledged as extraordinary.
“I don’t remember the last time I was part of something like that,” Olyslagers said after the event. “To have four women jump 1.99m on their first attempt is something special.”
Despite not being in what she described as her “absolute championship best shape,” Olyslagers remained focused on the joy of the sport. “I just thought to myself, ‘What have I got to give today?’” she reflected. “It was just the simple joy of jumping.”
The silver medal holds particular significance for Olyslagers, as it also represents a personal best (PB) for her indoors. “This medal means a lot because it showed me that there is so much more to give even when everything isn’t perfect,” she added.
Australian Athletes Shine in Other Events
Olyslagers’ performance was just one highlight of a strong showing from Australian athletes across various events at the championships.
In the women’s 1,500 metres, Australia’s Olympic silver medallist Jess Hull delivered a solid performance. She finished second in her heat with a time of 4:12.45, securing her spot in the final, which took place on Monday morning AEDT. Hull’s consistent form throughout the competition showcased her readiness for the upcoming challenges.
Her teammate, Adam Spencer, also advanced to the men’s 1,500m final. Spencer placed second in his heat with a time of 3:40.79, demonstrating his competitive edge and determination.
Other notable performances included Peter Bol and Hayley Kitching, who both advanced from the heats in their respective 800m events. Bol won his heat with a time of 1:45.87, while Kitching secured second place in her preliminary round with a time of 2:00.09.
Teammates and Competitors
In addition to Olyslagers, Australia’s Eleanor Patterson also competed in the high jump. She recorded a jump of 1.93m, finishing in seventh place. While she did not make it to the podium, her performance was still a testament to her growing strength and consistency.
The overall competition highlighted the depth of talent within the Australian team, with multiple athletes advancing through the rounds and showcasing their skills on an international stage.
Looking Ahead
As the World Athletics Indoor Championships continue, the focus will now shift to the finals, where these athletes will have the opportunity to claim gold and further cement their legacies. For Olyslagers, the silver medal serves as a reminder of her resilience and ability to perform under pressure.
With the support of her teammates and the encouragement of fans back home, the Australian athletes are well-positioned to make a strong impact in the coming days. Their performances not only reflect their individual dedication but also the collective effort of the entire team.
