Ukrainian Drones Crash in Finland, Kyiv Cites Russian Interference
Kyiv has issued an apology to Helsinki following the incident where two Ukrainian drones crashed in southern Finland over the weekend. Ukrainian officials suggest that the most probable cause for the drones straying into Finnish airspace was interference from Russian electronic warfare systems.
“Under no circumstances were any Ukrainian drones directed toward Finland,” stated Georgiy Tykhy, spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, to reporters. “The most likely cause is interference from Russian electronic warfare systems. We have already apologised to the Finnish side for this incident.”
The apology was conveyed shortly after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine confirmed a discussion with his Finnish counterpart, Alexander Stubb. In a post on the social media platform X, Zelenskyy indicated that both nations are actively “sharing all necessary information” regarding the event.
The Finnish Defence Ministry reported that two drones had entered Finnish territory near the southern city of Kouvola on Sunday, an occurrence they described as a “suspected territorial violation.” Defence Minister Antti Hakkanen emphasised the seriousness with which the intrusion is being treated.
“Drones have strayed into Finland’s territory. We take this very seriously,” Hakkanen stated, confirming that security authorities were dispatched to the crash sites to commence an investigation.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, speaking with Finnish state broadcaster Yle, acknowledged the likelihood that the drones were Ukrainian. However, he stressed that the matter is subject to ongoing investigation, with further announcements to be made once findings are confirmed.
Orpo also pointed to recent Ukrainian military activities targeting Russian territories adjacent to Finland’s extensive 1,340-kilometre border. Ukraine has reportedly conducted several strikes on port facilities along the Russian coast in the Gulf of Finland in the preceding week.
The Finnish Defence Ministry detailed that on Sunday morning, “a few low-flying slow objects were observed in Finnish airspace in the sea area and in southeastern Finland.” In response, the Finnish Air Force deployed an F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet to conduct an identification mission.
The ministry further elaborated on the crash locations: “One drone has fallen to the ground north of Kouvola and another drone east of Kouvola. The police have cordoned off the areas for further investigation.”
