Tim Tszyu’s Crucial Easter Showdown
Tim Tszyu’s upcoming match against Denis Nurja on Easter Sunday has taken on a new significance, as the Australian boxer is set to potentially rise to the top of the WBO’s super-welterweight rankings if he wins. This fight in Wollongong could position Tszyu for a world title shot this year, adding even more pressure to an already high-stakes event.
Tszyu, currently unranked in the super-welterweight division by the WBO, is ranked fourth in the middleweight category due to his last fight against Anthony Velazquez being at a catch weight. A victory over Nurja would not only elevate his standing but also open the door for potential fights against top contenders like Errol Spence, Xander Zayas, or Jaron Ennis.
Preparing for the Big Fight
At the weigh-in, Tszyu successfully made weight at 157 pounds and expressed confidence in his current state. “I woke up this morning and for the first time in my career I didn’t have to do like a bath or do a work-out,” he said. “I sort of woke up at whatever time I was needed to and just hopped on the scales and I was there.”
Tszyu is also benefiting from his new team, which includes esteemed Cuban trainer Pedro Diaz. “There has been a big difference technically, different tactics as well, working on fundamentals, putting myself in different boxing situations,” he explained. “Just trying to improve on every point.”

A Statement Fight
With so much on the line, Tszyu is determined to make a statement. “If he doesn’t start running, then I’m going to get him out,” he said. “Victory by any means, of course. Doesn’t really bother me in which way but you don’t get paid overtime in the sport so if we can get it done nice and early or whatever, I’m all for that.”
This fight will also mark a family milestone for Tszyu, as neither his younger brother Nikita nor their Hall of Famer father Kostya had a professional fight in Wollongong.
Other Exciting Fights on the Card
In addition to Tszyu’s main event, several other notable fights are scheduled. Sam Goodman, ranked fifth in the IBF super bantamweight division, will face Argentinian Rodrigo Ruiz in a world title eliminator. Goodman previously challenged for a featherweight title but was unsuccessful. Ruiz, ranked 10th, has won regional titles and only lost once by a points decision.

Another exciting undercard feature is a heavyweight bout between former NRL stars Nelson Asofa-Solomona and Jarrod Wallace. Asofa-Solomona, who stands two metres tall and weighs nearly 14kg more than Wallace, will have a significant advantage in both height and weight.
On the main card, Australia’s rising boxing stars Callum Peters and Paulo Aokuso will also be in action. Peters, a middleweight and 2024 Olympian, has an undefeated record with five knockouts. Aokuso, a light heavyweight, is also unbeaten with nine wins and four knockouts.
These fights promise to deliver an exciting night of boxing, with plenty of talent and high stakes on display.
