Olympic Gold Medallists Shine at Australian Open Swimming Championships
Olympic gold medallists Mollie O’Callaghan and Kyle Chambers have made a significant impact in Queensland, securing the 100m freestyle titles at the Australian Open swimming championships. The event took place on Monday night at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, where both athletes delivered strong performances that signal their readiness for upcoming major competitions.
Mollie O’Callaghan, known for her relaxed approach, won the women’s 100m freestyle with a time of 52.66 seconds. This performance came ahead of important meets later in the year. She finished ahead of Meg Harris, who clocked 53.36 seconds, followed by Olivia Wunsch (53.58) and Shayna Jack (53.92).
The opening night of finals saw a double dose of success for the “Special K” duo, Kyle Chalmers and Kaylee McKeown. Their performances sent a clear message to selectors and rivals as they prepare for the Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championships.
Kyle Chalmers, who is aiming to defend his title at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, stopped the clock at 48.39 seconds. His time demonstrated that his season is on track. Flynn Southam finished second with 48.80 seconds, while Kai Taylor came third with 48.94 seconds. Chalmers expressed satisfaction with his victory and the form of his fellow competitors.
“It’s always nice to get your hand on the wall first and win a race,” he said. “To see the other boys do so well and really push me right to the end just shows where we’re at as a country in the 100 freestyle and the depth coming through.”
In the women’s 200m backstroke, world champion Kaylee McKeown set a strong pace, finishing with a time of 2:05.66. Hannah Fredericks came in second with 2:08.80, and Jenna Forrester placed third with 2:10.74.
Lani Pallister continued her impressive form over the past 12 months, securing a dominant victory in the 800m freestyle final with a time of 8:11.28. This performance marked the third-fastest time ever recorded in this event.
The Australian swimming trials for the Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championships are set to take place in Sydney from June 7 to 13. The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow are scheduled to run from July 23 to August 2. These events will provide further opportunities for athletes to showcase their skills and prepare for international competition.
