The Inside Story of Nicolas Sarkozy’s Prison Stay: A Glimpse into “Diary of a Prisoner”
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s recent experience in prison has been a subject of intense public interest. Sarkozy, 70, made history in October by becoming the first president of modern France to be incarcerated. This followed his conviction for illicitly seeking funds from Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi to finance his 2007 presidential campaign. He received a five-year sentence but was released after serving 20 days, subject to certain restrictions, after an appeals court determined he posed no flight risk.
Sarkozy has documented his time behind bars in a 216-page book titled “Diary of a Prisoner,” scheduled for release on December 10th. Excerpts from the book have already surfaced in various French media outlets, offering a revealing account of his experience.
A World of Grey and Solitude
According to these excerpts, Sarkozy’s time in prison was characterized by greyness and solitude. He describes a monotonous environment where the colour grey seemed to dominate every aspect of his confinement.
“Grey dominated everything, devoured everything, covered every surface,” he wrote. “I would have given anything to be able to look out the window, to enjoy watching the cars go by.”
Moments of Reflection and Prayer
During his first night in prison, Sarkozy found solace in prayer after watching a football match.
“It came naturally,” he wrote. “I stayed like that for several minutes. I prayed for the strength to bear the cross of this injustice.”
Confined and Protected
Sarkozy, who served as president from 2007 to 2012, was under the protection of two security officers while incarcerated. He spent 23 hours a day confined to his cell, with the exception of visiting hours.
Lessons Learned Behind Bars
Despite the challenging circumstances, Sarkozy claims to have gained valuable insights during his time at La Sante prison.
“It’s often said that you learn at any age. That’s true because I learned a great deal at La Sante prison, about others as well as about myself,” he wrote.
A Simple Diet
His daily meals consisted of basic provisions.
- Dairy products
- Cereal bars
- Mineral water
- Apple juice
- A few sweet treats
Writing from Within
In an interview, Sarkozy revealed that he wrote the majority of the book while imprisoned. He described writing “with a ballpoint pen on a small plywood table every day” and completing the book after his release on November 10th.
Ongoing Influence and Legal Battles
Despite the legal challenges he has faced since leaving office, Sarkozy remains a significant figure within the French right-wing political landscape. He has consistently maintained his innocence regarding the charges against him. An appeals trial is scheduled to commence in March.
A Series of Legal Challenges
The former president has been embroiled in a series of legal challenges since his departure from office. These challenges have cast a shadow over his post-presidency life, adding complexity to his legacy. The upcoming appeals trial will be a crucial moment in determining the outcome of these long-standing allegations.
