E-Cigarette Use Linked to Severe Health Crises, Including Acute Kidney Failure and Neurological Damage
A chilling case emerging from Hanoi highlights the escalating dangers associated with electronic cigarette, or vape, usage. A 19-year-old university student experienced a sudden and severe health collapse, including convulsions and a coma, ultimately leading to acute kidney failure after consuming only a few puffs of an e-cigarette with friends.
The young patient was transferred to Bach Mai Hospital, a prominent general medical facility in Hanoi, in a critical state. Medical professionals immediately placed him on mechanical ventilation and sedation. Doctors at the Poison Control Center diagnosed acute poisoning directly linked to his e-cigarette use.
His condition deteriorated with alarming speed. While he was successfully weaned off the ventilator and regained consciousness just over a day after admission, the damage was profound. He subsequently developed severe kidney failure, a complication that has become increasingly prevalent in e-cigarette poisoning cases.
Three days post-admission, the student was able to communicate his experiences, but his kidney function remained critically impaired. Beyond the physical toll, he also exhibited significant mental health challenges, reporting anxiety, extreme stress, and memory loss. The exact toxic agent responsible for his severe condition could not be identified as the patient did not have the e-cigarette device with him.
Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen, Director of the Poison Control Center at Bach Mai Hospital, has observed a disturbing trend. “In the past, most e-cigarette poisoning cases only caused brain damage, but recently we have seen many cases with severe kidney complications,” Dr. Nguyen stated. This shift underscores the evolving and unpredictable nature of the health risks posed by these devices.
The Silent Threat Within E-Liquids
The synthetic chemicals commonly found in e-cigarette liquids present a unique challenge for medical professionals. Currently, there is no specific antidote available for these substances. Treatment regimens are therefore focused on managing symptoms and supporting vital functions. This includes providing respiratory and circulatory assistance, administering non-specific detoxification treatments, and diligently correcting any metabolic imbalances that arise.
The long-term outlook for individuals who experience severe poisoning from vaping is a significant cause for concern. Many patients continue to suffer from lingering effects even after their discharge from hospital care. These persistent issues can include persistent memory loss, difficulties with concentration, and behavioral disorders stemming from the neurological damage caused by the toxins.

Recent analyses of e-cigarette liquids have revealed the presence of a variety of dangerous and banned substances. These include potent compounds such as MDMB-BUTINACA and ADB-BUTINACA, commonly known as synthetic cannabis, alongside other novel psychoactive compounds.

These products are often a cocktail of thousands of toxic chemicals. Furthermore, they frequently contain exceedingly high concentrations of nicotine, often in a salt form. This formulation is designed to mask the harshness of high nicotine levels, enabling users to inhale massive doses without immediately perceiving the severe danger they are exposing themselves to.
The risks associated with vaping are now understood to extend far beyond those traditionally associated with smoking. Medical professionals emphasize that vaping can lead to serious health consequences, including cancer, cardiovascular damage, and severe forms of pneumonia.
