Former Fencing Star Nam Hyun-hee Cleared of Fraud Complicity Charges
Nam Hyun-hee, a 44-year-old former member of the South Korean national fencing team, has been cleared of charges related to aiding and abetting fraud. Prosecutors have determined that there is insufficient evidence to indict her, concluding that she was, in fact, a victim of the alleged fraudster, Jeon Cheong-jo.
The decision, announced by the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors’ Office on the 13th, means Nam will not face charges for violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes (fraud) or the Act on the Regulation and Punishment of the Concealment of Criminal Proceeds.

According to the official ruling, prosecutors stated, “Rather than recognizing the suspect’s involvement in Jeon Cheong-jo’s fraudulent acts or other criminal activities, it is more accurate to say she was exploited by Jeon Cheong-jo.” This conclusion was reached after a thorough review of the available evidence, which was deemed insufficient to prove Nam’s guilt.
The legal team representing Nam Hyun-hee also confirmed the outcome. Son Soo-ho, an attorney at Law Firm Ji-hyuk, shared on social media, “We have finally received the prosecutors’ decision not to indict Coach Nam Hyun-hee. It has once again clarified the reasons for the ‘no charges’ ruling.”
Details of the ‘No Charges’ Ruling:
Attorney Son elaborated on the specific points highlighted by the prosecution in their decision:
- Exploitation by Jeon Cheong-jo: The prosecutors explicitly stated that Nam was exploited by Jeon.
- Confirmation of iCloud Access: It was noted that Nam was even provided with Jeon’s iCloud password and confirmed its contents, suggesting a level of access that did not equate to complicity in fraud.
- Lack of Knowledge of Prior Convictions: Crucially, the ruling found no evidence to suggest Nam was aware of Jeon Cheong-jo’s prior fraud convictions, unpaid salaries to security guards, or the ongoing fraud investigation at the time.
These findings effectively bring both the civil and criminal aspects of the case concerning Nam Hyun-hee to a close.

Despite the legal resolution, Attorney Son expressed concern over the continued malicious online attacks directed at Nam. He highlighted that “Serious defamatory comments are still being posted.” A recent review revealed “numerous creative and sexually derogatory remarks have flooded in from across the country. The content and severity are shocking.” He emphasized that these actions constitute clear criminal offenses and are subject to legal punishment, urging for an immediate cessation of such behavior.
Background of the Allegations:
The controversy began in August 2023 when Nam Hyun-hee announced her remarriage to Jeon Cheong-jo on her social media platforms. Shortly thereafter, allegations surfaced that Jeon had engaged in fraudulent activities by impersonating a third-generation chaebol heir. These claims led to suspicions that Nam had assisted Jeon in soliciting investments from victims.
Further allegations suggested that a portion of the illicit funds obtained through the alleged fraud may have been channeled into accounts associated with Nam or used to acquire high-end properties and vehicles registered in her name.
In November of the previous year, Jeon Cheong-jo was sentenced to 13 years in prison. This sentence was imposed for fraud totaling approximately 3 billion Korean won and for the assault of Nam’s nephew. The legal proceedings have now concluded for Nam Hyun-hee, who has been cleared of any wrongdoing in connection with Jeon’s criminal activities.
