Breakthrough in Abduction Case: DNA from Glove Offers New Hope
TUCSON, Arizona – Investigators have secured a significant lead in the abduction of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the mother of US television journalist Savannah Guthrie. A DNA sample recovered from a glove found near Mrs. Guthrie’s home has yielded preliminary results that appear to match the pair worn by a masked prowler captured on doorbell camera footage shortly before her disappearance. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced the development yesterday, signalling a potential breakthrough in the high-profile case that has captivated the nation.
The DNA analysis, conducted by a private crime laboratory in Florida, was received by the FBI on Saturday. While awaiting final quality control and official confirmation, the results are poised for submission to the national DNA database, CODIS (Combined DNA Index System), for comparison. This process, typically taking around 24 hours once a sample is received by the FBI, could potentially yield a “hit” as early as Monday, forensic experts indicated.
The glove in question was among approximately 16 items collected by investigators in a field about two miles from Mrs. Guthrie’s residence. While most of the recovered gloves were inadvertently dropped by search personnel, the specific glove submitted for analysis is described as “different” and strongly appears to match those worn by the individual seen attempting to tamper with Mrs. Guthrie’s door camera in the early morning hours preceding her abduction.
In the wake of this DNA announcement, Savannah Guthrie shared a heartfelt video message on social media, expressing continued hope for her mother’s safe return. She issued a direct plea to whoever may be holding her mother or possesses knowledge of her whereabouts, urging them to “do the right thing.” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos echoed this sentiment, stating on Friday his strong conviction that the individual captured on video, equipped with a firearm and a substantial backpack, is the primary suspect authorities are seeking.
Search Enters Critical Third Week
Nancy Guthrie was last seen on January 31st, having been dropped off at her home by family after a dinner engagement. Relatives reported her missing the following day. Sheriff Nanos has emphasized that Mrs. Guthrie, who has significantly limited physical mobility and requires daily medication, could not have left her home unassisted. This assessment led investigators to conclude early in the investigation that she was taken against her will.
Since her disappearance, at least two purported ransom notes have emerged, both initially delivered to news media outlets. However, there has been no confirmed direct contact between Mrs. Guthrie’s alleged captors and her family or law enforcement officials. Last week, officials confirmed that traces of blood found on her front porch were identified through DNA testing as belonging to Mrs. Guthrie.
Family members and law enforcement have consistently described Mrs. Guthrie as being in frail health, reliant on daily medication, and possessing a pacemaker. Sheriff Nanos also revealed on Friday that DNA samples, not belonging to Nancy Guthrie or individuals close to her, had been collected from her property. Official updates on the analysis of these samples are still pending.
A Plea for Return and Public Support
Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of the NBC News “Today” show, along with her siblings Camron and Annie Guthrie, have been actively sharing video messages pleading for their mother’s safe return and soliciting public assistance. In one such appeal, they expressed their readiness to meet any ransom demands.
In her most recent Instagram video, posted exactly two weeks after her mother was reported missing, Savannah directly addressed “whoever has her or knows where she is,” stating, “We believe in the essential goodness of every human being, and it’s never too late.”
Sheriff Nanos informed Reuters on Friday that while no proof of life has surfaced since the abduction, there has also been “not been any proof of death either.”
In a significant development on Friday night, sheriff’s deputies and FBI agents executed a federal court-ordered warrant, searching a house in an affluent neighbourhood located less than two miles from Mrs. Guthrie’s residence. Authorities confirmed over the weekend that a person was questioned during a related traffic stop that same night, although no arrests were made in connection with either incident. The suspected kidnapping has garnered widespread media attention and has elicited expressions of sympathy and support from prominent figures, including President Donald Trump.
