The statistics for the Phillies’ defence this year are concerning. As a team, they’ve accumulated a -25 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS), a figure that stands as the worst in Major League Baseball. Their Outs Above Average (OAA) total sits at 22nd in the league, while their Fielding Run Value (FRV) ranks 15th. To put this into perspective, the Phillies boasted 0 DRS, 8 OAA, and -14 FRV last season. This dramatic drop-off highlights a systemic issue that needs addressing.
Rare Misstep from a Reliable Catcher
A notable defensive lapse occurred on May 30th during a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Andy Pages managed to score a run despite not appearing to touch home plate, as catcher J.T. Realmuto failed to make a tag or initiate a proper appeal. This is an uncharacteristic error from Realmuto, who has otherwise performed well this season with 3 DRS and 5 OAA. Interim manager Don Mattingly challenged the call, but once it was clear Realmuto hadn’t tagged Pages, the decision stood.
Star First Baseman’s Defensive Decline
Bryce Harper, who earned a Gold Glove Award for his stellar defence at first base in 2024, has seen a significant regression in his fielding performance this year. In his award-winning season, Harper posted an impressive 5 DRS, 8 OAA, and 5 FRV. While his offensive contributions remain elite, his defensive game at first base has faltered. This season, he’s recorded -1 DRS, -7 OAA, and -5 FRV. His -7 Outs Above Average is the lowest among all qualified first basemen, and his -5 Fielding Run Value ties him for the worst mark in that category.
Middle Infield’s Struggles
The double-play combination of Bryson Stott and Trea Turner has also experienced a defensive downturn. Turner’s performance at shortstop, in particular, might reignite discussions about a potential position change in the off-season. This is particularly disappointing given Turner’s perceived improvement at the position after subpar seasons in 2023 and 2024. This year, Turner has accumulated -3 DRS, -2 OAA, and -2 FRV. Stott, meanwhile, has recorded -7 DRS, 4 OAA, and 3 FRV. While his OAA and FRV are respectable, his -7 DRS is tied for the fewest among qualified second basemen, contributing to the team’s overall defensive struggles.
Potential Outfield Alignment Adjustments
One strategic move that could bolster the Phillies’ defence involves shifting Justin Crawford from centre field to either left or right field, at least temporarily. Crawford has struggled considerably in centre field this season, posting -5 DRS, -2 OAA, and -1 FRV. He ranks among the six worst qualified centre fielders in each of these metrics. Given the team’s broader defensive issues, a move to a corner outfield spot might be beneficial for Crawford’s development and the team’s overall fielding. For the time being, it appears Brandon Marsh, Adolis García, and the recently called-up Steward Berroa could handle centre field duties.
Roster Moves and Playing Time Could Yield Improvements
Recent roster changes and adjustments to playing time could prove advantageous for the Phillies’ defence. Edmundo Sosa has seen increased action in the outfield, making a career-high seven appearances and five starts, all in left field. In these outfield stints, Sosa has recorded -1 DRS, 0 OAA, and -1 FRV.
The defensive capabilities of the Phillies could also be enhanced by the inclusion of Steward Berroa in the lineup. In his 26 major league games, including 12 starts, Berroa has demonstrated promise with 5 DRS, 4 OAA, and 5 FRV across three outfield positions. With Berroa now on the 26-man roster, replacing Otto Kemp, the Phillies have a legitimate fourth outfielder available on the bench, offering more flexibility and potentially stronger defensive options.
