Actor Justin Baldoni Eyes Advocacy Role After High-Profile Legal Battle
Weeks after reaching a settlement in his protracted legal dispute with Blake Lively, actor and filmmaker Justin Baldoni is reportedly considering a new path: advocacy for individuals who have faced false accusations. Baldoni, 42, and Lively, 38, were embroiled in a contentious legal battle for approximately eighteen months, stemming from Lively’s lawsuit filed in December 2024. The suit alleged sexual harassment, retaliatory conduct, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
The legal proceedings saw a significant development in April when a judge dismissed 10 of the 13 claims Lively had initially presented, including those related to sexual harassment, conspiracy, and defamation. The parties ultimately reached a settlement just two weeks before a scheduled trial date on May 18th.
Now, Baldoni’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, has indicated that his client might step into a public role speaking out for those who have been wrongfully accused and “beaten up by a power dynamic.” Freedman made these remarks to TMZ in New York City during a hearing concerning legal fees in the Baldoni-Lively case. He suggested that Baldoni is still contemplating his future career trajectory following the conclusion of the litigation last month.
Freedman acknowledged the emotional toll the ordeal has taken on Baldoni. “I think it’s still been tough for him,” he stated. “He’s still going through a lot, and you go through anything like that, it’s really shattering your ego and your pride and your vulnerability and all of it.” He further described Baldoni as someone who “really opens himself up in a way that most people don’t,” adding that this authenticity has been “wounded.”
Despite the challenges, Baldoni has found significant support from the public amidst the nearly two-year public dispute with Lively. Freedman highlighted the impact of this public backing, calling it “so meaningful to him and so powerful to him.” He added, “He’s blown away at the love that he’s gotten, and it’s helped him survive.”
The core principle behind Baldoni’s potential activism, according to Freedman, would be the message that “you can be a good person, and not be taken advantage of just because you’re kind.”
A Joint Statement on Shared Goals
In the wake of the settlement, Lively and Baldoni issued a joint statement through their respective legal teams, emphasizing their shared objectives. The statement read: “Raising awareness, and making a meaningful impact in the lives of domestic violence survivors – and all survivors – is a goal that we stand behind. It is our sincere hope that this brings closure and allows all involved to move forward constructively and in peace, including a respectful environment online.”
Lively’s initial lawsuit had accused Baldoni of various forms of sexual harassment, including body shaming, and of orchestrating a smear campaign to damage her reputation. The lawsuit also named several of Baldoni’s associates, including his company Wayfarer Studios, its CEO, its financial backer, and public relations personnel.
Baldoni had initially sought $250 million in damages from The New York Times, alleging a published report was defamatory. This claim was later incorporated into a larger $400 million lawsuit filed in January, which named Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds, and her publicist Leslie Sloane. This suit was ultimately dismissed in June 2025, with all parties denying the allegations.
Behind the Scenes: “It Ends With Us”
The film “It Ends with Us,” which starred both Lively and Baldoni, garnered significant box office success, earning $148 million domestically and $350 million globally. However, the film’s positive reception has been overshadowed by the public allegations made by its lead actors.
Based on Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel, the movie explored a complex relationship. The storyline centered on Lily Bloom, portrayed by Lively, who navigates a difficult past and encounters a neurosurgeon, Ryle Kincaid, played by Baldoni. The film’s narrative delves into Lily’s journey as she begins to see unsettling parallels between her new partner’s behaviour and her parents’ relationship. The supporting cast included Hasan Minhaj, Brandon Sklenar, and Kevin McKidd.
