Fox’s Triumphant Return: From Kidney Surgery to Silver Medal Glory

Just nine months ago, the thought of returning to the water for Olympic champion Jess Fox seemed a distant dream. Undergoing surgery to remove a tumour from her kidney, the Australian paddling sensation faced an uncertain future, her career hanging precariously in the balance. The recovery was arduous, and the prospect of missing her home World Championships last year cast a long shadow. Yet, in a remarkable display of resilience and determination, Fox has not only made a comeback but has surprised even herself, clinching a silver medal at the recent World Cup event in Prague.

The 31-year-old from Sydney’s west delivered a stunning performance in the K1 final, a mere 0.13 of a second separating her from the gold. It was a poignant moment for Australia’s golden girl, a powerful testament to her unwavering spirit.

“It was surreal to be back,” Fox shared with Nine’s Today program on Tuesday. “Coming into this competition I was really nervous, but really excited. Nine months ago I was in hospital getting a tumour removed from my kidney and didn’t know whether I’d get back on the water. I had to miss a home world champs.”

The journey back has been a long and challenging one. The familiar pre-race jitters returned as she stood on the start line in Prague, a potent reminder of the passion that drives her. “I was feeling the energy from the crowd, I was feeling that flow state that athletes always look for, and for me it was about doing good runs,” she explained. “So to actually make the final and then put down a silver medal performance I was so happy, just to be out there again.”

Having already graced four Olympic Games, the Australian sporting public is eagerly anticipating Fox’s potential appearance at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. However, the path to this point was fraught with doubt, with Fox herself admitting that even making it back into a kayak felt like a monumental task.

A Journey of Patience and Small Victories

Fox recounted the emotional moments leading up to her surgery. “The day before my surgery I remember giving myself a little pep talk before my last (paddling) session, telling myself, ‘you might be the fittest you’ve ever been right now, you might be strong and ready to race, but we don’t know what the next nine months will look like so just get out there and enjoy your last session’,” she said.

The physical and mental recovery required a significant shift in perspective. “I said to myself the body remembers, the mind remembers, and I was really holding onto that, because it took me so long to get back in the gym again and get that last pull-up, just body weight, whereas in the past I was doing it with 40kg around my waist,” she revealed. This experience underscored the importance of patience and celebrating incremental progress. “So it was about being patient, building back up slowly and celebrating those little wins.”

The return to elite competition has also brought a sense of novelty. Fox described it as being forced to “enjoy being a beginner again.” This sentiment was humorously illustrated by a recent mishap on tour. “And being back on tour I’ve felt like a beginner again as well because I turned up in Prague and (had) forgot my paddle in Slovenia… so I’m out of practice,” she admitted with a laugh.

Despite the occasional lapse in memory, the core of her skill and determination remains. “But we are back, we will be fine,” she affirmed, a confident declaration of her enduring capability.

The World Cup tour is far from over, with the next stop in Germany promising further opportunities for Fox to showcase her incredible talent and inspiring comeback. Her journey serves as a powerful reminder of the human capacity for overcoming adversity and the enduring allure of athletic pursuit.
