Delany’s Career Night Powers Melbourne United Through Tough JackJumpers Encounter
Melbourne United has secured a hard-fought 82-68 victory over a resilient Tasmania JackJumpers in a crucial NBL play-in qualifier. The win was spearheaded by Finn Delany, who matched his career-best scoring tally with a stellar 33 points, proving to be the difference-maker on the night at John Cain Arena.
For much of the contest, the undermanned JackJumpers proved a formidable obstacle, refusing to yield despite significant challenges. It took United the better part of three quarters to finally assert their dominance and shake off their tenacious opponents.
Delany’s offensive masterclass was evident throughout the game. He shot an impressive 13-of-19 from the field, showcasing a variety of offensive skills. He received significant support from import Milton Doyle, who provided a vital spark off the bench, contributing 19 points. Doyle was particularly effective from beyond the arc, sinking 5-of-9 three-pointers.
On the other side of the court, the JackJumpers, despite their valiant effort, were severely hampered by a lengthy injury list. Key players, including captain Will Magnay and American import Bryce Hamilton, were absent, forcing coach Scott Roth to rely on a predominantly five-man rotation. This lack of depth was starkly visible as the JackJumpers remarkably recorded zero points from their bench. Nick Marshall was a standout for Tasmania, playing all 40 minutes and pouring in 20 points, with David Johnson and Josh Bannan adding 16 points each.
Melbourne United coach Dean Vickerman acknowledged the JackJumpers’ grit and the strategic challenges they presented. “We knew (in) the second and fourth quarters, they (Tasmania) were going to play guys heavy minutes,” Vickerman commented. “I thought if we could just keep chipping away, we’d be able to make some runs. In both those quarters we did.”
The early stages of the game were characterised by tight defence and offensive struggles for both teams, with scoring proving to be a premium. The JackJumpers managed to build an early lead, with Bannan and Johnson orchestrating a 9-0 run that put them up 15-8. However, Melbourne United responded with a powerful 18-4 surge, spanning across the first quarter break, to take a 26-19 advantage.
Tasmania’s persistence, particularly their aggressive offensive rebounding, kept them within striking distance even during periods of offensive drought. At one point, the JackJumpers endured a stretch of 14 consecutive missed field goals, spanning nearly eight minutes of play. Nevertheless, their relentless effort on the boards prevented Melbourne from pulling away decisively.
The second quarter saw Melbourne begin to find their rhythm. Delany proved a difficult matchup for the JackJumpers, and United outscored Tasmania 25-14 in the term. This allowed them to overturn a 15-17 quarter-time deficit into a comfortable 40-31 halftime lead.
The third period reverted to a more grinding style of play, dictated by Tasmania’s defensive intensity. The JackJumpers managed to draw level briefly, but Melbourne managed to edge ahead 56-55 as the quarter drew to a close.
Entering the final quarter, Melbourne faced their own challenges. Tyson Walker was hampered by foul trouble, Chris Goulding was playing through pain from a cyst behind his knee, and key big man Jesse Edwards was sidelined with back spasms. For a moment, it seemed as though United might falter.
However, it was in this moment of adversity that Melbourne United truly showed their mettle. Led by the inspired performances of Delany and Doyle, they ignited a crucial 11-2 run in the fourth quarter. This decisive surge propelled them to a commanding 74-61 lead, ultimately proving too much for the depleted JackJumpers, who began to run out of steam.
Despite the loss, Tasmania coach Scott Roth expressed immense pride in his team’s performance throughout the season. “This has probably been the most rewarding year of my career,” Roth stated. “Most teams can’t sustain what we went through. This is better than a championship in a lot of ways… we stuck our head up and we should be quite proud of what we did.”
Melbourne United will now turn their attention to their next challenge, travelling to Perth to face the Wildcats in the upcoming play-in game on Saturday.
