Melbourne United Primed for NBL Finals Push, First Test Against Dangerous Tasmania
Melbourne United are signalling their intent to go deep into the National Basketball League (NBL) finals, with their play-in qualifier against a formidable Tasmania outfit marking their immediate challenge. The Victorian powerhouse is aiming for a third consecutive grand final series appearance, but faces a gruelling path after securing a fifth-place finish in the regular season.
To advance to the next stage of the post-season, United must overcome the sixth-placed Tasmania JackJumpers at John Cain Arena on Thursday night.
Melbourne’s season experienced a significant downturn in December, a stark contrast to their opening nine-game winning streak. However, they’ve since rallied impressively, demonstrating the resilience needed to contend for their first championship since the 2020-21 season. Adding to their optimism, the team is hopeful of fielding a full-strength squad, with two-time league Defensive Player of the Year, Shea Ili, expected to suit up despite ongoing hamstring concerns.
“The last eight games of the year, we got back to statistically being the best defensive team, so that’s always a good base for us,” stated United coach Dean Vickerman. “We’ve been really working on our offensive confidence and how we space the floor in big moments.”
Conversely, Tasmania has been significantly hampered by injuries, with captain Will Magnay among a substantial list of sidelined players. JackJumpers coach Scott Roth has adopted a “free swing” mentality for his squad, acknowledging that few expect the undermanned Tasmanian side to cause an upset against Melbourne on their home court.
“No one’s expecting anything from us… our guys will play without the fear of failure,” Roth remarked.

Despite Tasmania’s personnel issues, rival coach Vickerman highlighted the persistent shooting threats posed by players like Majok Deng, Nick Marshall, and David Johnson. However, United’s primary focus remains on executing their own game plan, rather than dwelling on the specific challenges presented by the 2023-24 JackJumpers roster.
“The JackJumpers have always been tricky to prepare for; they always play a physical brand of basketball, whoever is on the floor,” the United coach elaborated. “I guess our focus has really been on how we can put together the best style of basketball that can compete against anyone in this play-off series and not only compete but, you know, be able to beat anyone in this play-off series.”
A pivotal figure in United’s finals campaign will be club MVP Jesse Edwards, the Dutch import who is set to play a crucial role in his maiden NBL finals appearance. Edwards delivered his most impactful performance of the season in their round-17 clash against Tasmania, where he amassed an impressive 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks in a nail-biting 79-77 victory in January.
“I think coming into our league as a five-man, there’s always an adjustment with the refereeing and how you deal with that, and that limited some of his minutes in the first part of the year,” Vickerman added, reflecting on Edwards’ development. “I think he’s got to a confidence level right now that he’s more than willing to not only be a receiver and catch lobs but he’s got the ability to take people one-on-one as well.”
Key Matchup Factors:
- Defensive Prowess: Melbourne’s strong defensive performance in the latter stages of the season provides a solid foundation.
- Offensive Execution: United’s focus on offensive confidence and floor spacing will be crucial in tight playoff situations.
- Tasmania’s Resilience: Despite injuries, the JackJumpers’ physical style and “fearless” approach can’t be underestimated.
- Edwards’ Impact: Jesse Edwards’ offensive versatility and growing confidence are vital for Melbourne’s success.
- Home Court Advantage: John Cain Arena provides a significant boost for Melbourne United.
The play-in game represents more than just an opening hurdle; it’s a critical test of Melbourne United’s mettle and their ability to translate regular-season improvements into post-season triumphs. As they navigate the challenges posed by an injury-hit but spirited Tasmania, United will be looking to lay down a marker and build momentum for a deep finals run.
