Clumber Spaniel Crowned Top Dog at Crufts 2024
A regal Clumber Spaniel has captured the coveted Best in Show title at this year’s prestigious Crufts, marking a significant win for the breed. Bruin, a four-year-old Clumber Spaniel, triumphed over a staggering field of thousands of canine competitors from across the globe. The annual dog show, held in Birmingham, culminated on Sunday with Bruin taking home the ultimate honour.
Handled by the delighted Lee Cox, Bruin had earlier impressed the judges to win the highly competitive Gundog group. This victory is particularly historic, as it represents the first time a Clumber Spaniel has been awarded Best in Show at Crufts since 1991, a testament to the breed’s enduring appeal and the exceptional qualities of this particular dog.
The final decision rested with esteemed judge Tamas Jakkel, who meticulously evaluated Bruin against the winners of the six other breed groups. After a tense deliberation, Bruin emerged victorious, earning the prestigious trophy.
A visibly emotional Lee Cox struggled to contain his joy. “It’s just amazing, I mean, what can I say? I can’t believe it,” he exclaimed. “Thank you so much. It’s just wonderful for this breed… for the first time in my life, I’m speechless.”
Cox went on to describe Bruin as a “dog of a lifetime,” emphasizing the profound bond they share. “He really, really is. He’s very, very special. I absolutely adore him. And he adores me.” He even playfully quipped that Bruin seemed keen to “eat your microphone” before reiterating his admiration for the champion canine.
When asked about Bruin’s personality, Cox offered a fond description. “Bit of a diva, a bit like me really, likes his own way, very chilled, but will never, ever let me down. Never lets me down.” He had previously characterised Bruin as a “walking cartoon character in a fluffy white coat,” a description that clearly resonated with his winning performance.
For his remarkable achievement, Cox will receive a replica of the trophy and a cash prize of £200. As Claudia Winkleman, the presenter of the popular show The Traitors, presented the trophy, she remarked on the palpable atmosphere in the arena. “The atmosphere, when he came out. They loved all the dogs, but this one – they loved!”
Bruin’s triumph saw him surpass the achievements of over 18,000 other dogs who competed at Crufts this year. The reserve dog title was awarded to Meghan, a Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen from Croatia, who had previously won the Hound group.
Jannine Edgar, chief executive of The Kennel Club, extended her heartfelt congratulations to the winning pair. “Congratulations to Bruin and Lee for closing this year’s competition with a truly outstanding win and for taking home the prestigious Best in Show title,” she stated. “Their connection and skill in the ring have shone throughout, making them thoroughly deserving champions.”
