Star Actor Calls Out Audience Member for Disruptive Texting in West End Theatre
Rosamund Pike, the acclaimed star of Gone Girl, recently took a moment after a performance of the play Prima Facie in London’s West End to address a disruptive audience member. The incident, which occurred on a Saturday night, saw Pike politely but firmly call out an individual for using their mobile phone during the show, highlighting the impact such behaviour has on performers and the overall theatre experience.
According to reports, the audience initially mistook Pike’s appearance on stage post-performance for a solo ovation. However, she soon indicated for patrons to remain seated as she wished to speak.
“I just wanted to say, for anyone going to the theatre, it’s a huge thing that we’re trying to give you,” Pike explained to the assembled audience. “I am trying to tell you a story, and I’m feeling you, and I hope you’re feeling me too. Somebody was texting in this part – you know who you are, and I’m not going to single you out,” she continued, gesturing towards a section of the theatre.
Pike acknowledged the possibility that the texting could have been for an urgent matter, such as a medical emergency. “Maybe it was very important, and maybe you’re a doctor, and you’re saving someone’s life, and I hope you are – but we do see these; we do feel them. I’ve got you; I feel like I’ve got to hold you all, so when I feel that and see it, it’s hard.”
Her candid remarks were met with a significant round of applause from the theatregoers, indicating a general consensus on the importance of theatre etiquette.
Prima Facie, the work of award-winning Australian playwright Suzie Miller, has garnered considerable attention. Earlier this year, the play received a nomination for a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play. Pike herself was recognised for her performance, taking home the award for Best Actress.
The compelling narrative of Prima Facie centres on a high-profile London Crown Court judge. Her deeply held feminist and legal convictions are put to the test when her teenage son becomes embroiled in accusations of sexual assault.
This is not an isolated incident of actors addressing audience members about device usage in the theatre. In April, Lesley Manville, another esteemed actor, implored London theatre patrons to refrain from using their phones, even during the curtain call. She suggested that recording the final bows was disrespectful to the performers.
“Come on, it’s theatre; let’s preserve it. Let’s take the digital out of it for just a moment,” Manville stated during a performance of Les Liaisons Dangereuses at London’s National Theatre. “We are all in this room; we are telling you a story, you’re listening – clap or don’t clap, but don’t just stick your phone in our face. I find it insulting.”
Similarly, in April, Cynthia Erivo, known for her role in Wicked, paused a performance of Dracula on the West End. Erivo, who plays all 23 roles in the production, stopped the show when she noticed an audience member appearing to film the performance. A commenter on the forum Theatreboard reported, “[Erivo] looked out into the audience and said: ‘Are you filming? Is someone filming?’ and stopped the show.”
Further back, in 2017, actor Andrew Scott, famous for his role in Fleabag, halted his iconic “to be or not to be” soliloquy during a performance of Hamlet at London’s Almeida Theatre. The interruption occurred when an audience member produced a laptop. Scott recounted the experience on the Happy Sad podcast in 2024, explaining, “I was pausing and [the stage team] were like, ‘Get on with it’ and I was like, ‘There’s no way.’ I stopped for ages.”
Prima Facie serves as the follow-up to Miller’s highly successful 2019 play, The Children. This earlier work transferred to the West End in 2022 and achieved significant acclaim, winning Olivier Awards in 2023 for Best New Play and Best Actress for its star, Jodie Comer.
The play is currently enjoying a return season at the Ros Packer Theatre, featuring its original star, Sheridan Harbridge. The continued success and impact of Miller’s work underscore the power of theatre to provoke thought and discussion, making the preservation of the immersive audience experience all the more crucial.
