Macedonian Cultural Groups Withdraw from Moomba Parade Over Flag Dispute

A significant cultural contingent has withdrawn from Melbourne’s iconic Moomba Parade, citing a dispute over the display of a particular flag. The Federation of Macedonian Cultural Artistic Associations of Victoria, which had invested considerable effort in preparing for the event, announced their decision to pull out just hours before the parade was set to commence.

The core of the disagreement lies with the “Star of Kutlesh,” also recognised as the “Sun of Kutlesh” or the “Vergina Sun” flag. This emblem holds deep historical and cultural significance for the Macedonian community. It was adopted as the national flag by the Republic of Macedonia upon its declaration of independence in 1991. However, its use ignited a long-standing dispute with Greece, which asserts a cultural claim to the symbol. This contentious history led to the Republic of Macedonia eventually adopting a different sun design in 1995.

The City of Melbourne informed the Federation last week that carrying the Star of Kutlesh would not be permitted. This decision was reportedly based on the council’s overarching policy prohibiting the display of cultural symbols, even though official national flags were allowed.

In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, the Federation expressed the profound disappointment and the “heartbreaking” nature of their decision. They emphasised that participating without the disputed flag would necessitate a compromise of a crucial element of their community’s identity and heritage.

“After months of hard work by our dancers, choreographers, and everyone involved, this was a difficult and bitter decision,” the Federation stated. “No one is happy with how we’ve been pushed to this point or with the options before us.”

The group also voiced concerns about exposing participants, particularly children, to potential political tensions. They highlighted their dual identity as both members of the Macedonian diaspora and integral parts of the broader Melbourne community.

“Amid all this, we are also Melbournians and part of the broader Melbourne community,” the statement continued. “We were all ecstatic at the opportunity to represent our Macedonian heritage, identity, song, and dance to the Melbourne public at the iconic Moomba Parade. We won’t set a self-defeating precedent, we won’t compromise our dancers, choreographers, or cultural artistic associations — we will not attend.”

Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece acknowledged that discussions had been ongoing between the council and the Federation. He expressed his disappointment, stating that he had hoped for a resolution that would allow the Macedonian group to participate.

“That is really disappointing,” Cr Reece commented. “I thought we were going to get there and I was looking forward to seeing them in the parade. I mean, Moomba is a day for fun. It’s a time for family fun, ancient feuds about flags and things I really hope we can leave them at home and just come out and enjoy the day.”

The Moomba Parade, a cornerstone of Melbourne’s annual calendar, typically showcases a vibrant array of cultural groups, community organisations, and performers. This year’s event, however, will proceed without the participation of the Macedonian contingent, a decision that underscores the complexities of cultural representation and historical sensitivities within a multicultural society. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced when deeply held cultural symbols intersect with official protocols and international relations.
