The Australian music scene is mourning the loss of Phil Campbell, the long-serving guitarist for the iconic rock band Motörhead. Campbell, who was 64, died on Saturday night following complications from a major operation. Born in Pontypridd, Wales, Campbell joined Motörhead in 1984, stepping into the role of guitarist until the band’s disbandment in 2015, a decision made in the wake of the death of its legendary founder, Lemmy Kilmister. However, this highly anticipated tour was regrettably cancelled late last month due to his deteriorating health, a decision that foreshadowed the tragic news that was to follow.

Motörhead, a band synonymous with relentless rock and roll, released an impressive 23 albums over its illustrious 40-year career. Their discography boasts anthems that have become cornerstones of the hard rock genre, including enduring classics like “Ace of Spades,” “Overkill,” and “Hellraiser.”
The band’s creative output extended beyond their own recordings. Lemmy Kilmister, Motörhead’s charismatic frontman, also lent his songwriting talents to other artists. Notably, he co-wrote songs for Ozzy Osbourne’s quadruple-platinum album No More Tears in the early 1990s. According to Rolling Stone, Kilmister’s contributions included the Grammy-winning “I Don’t Want to Change the World” and the ferocious track “Hellraiser.”
