Australian Idol has reached the top 10 contestants and fans are more eager than ever for the countdown to begin. Despite standing ovations and rising young stars capturing audiences’ hearts, eliminations of the top 12 began last week and Aussie audiences are getting nostalgic as we’re reminded of all the wins, snubs, and chaos of the past. From Jessica Mauboy’s audition to success story pipeline to the memorable Guy Sebastian and Shannon Noll stand-off, Australian Idol has certainly had some memorable moments that have made the competition show the much-loved series that it is today.
As we prepare for more heartbreak and breakouts, here are some of the most iconic Australian Idol moments that live rent-free in our minds.
Guy Sebastian versus Shannon Noll…
In Australian Idol’s very first season in 2003, the now well-known Aussie popstar Guy Sebastian won the show’s inaugural season and rose to fame. However, what people remember most about Guy’s win is the battle that took place before it – the infamous “Nollsie vs Guy” rivalry. As Guy went head to head with the 2003 runner-up Shannon Noll, the Australian Idol 2003 grand finale became a national event as over three million Australians voted. This finale ultimately set the tone for every Aussie reality competition show to follow.
Also, despite Shannon Noll’s loss, his cover of What About Me arguably had a bigger early impact than Guy Sebastian’s releases, cementing him as an iconic Aussie underdog.
Casey Donovan’s historic win
In 2004, Gumbaynggirr and Dungatti woman Casey Donovan became the first Indigenous Australian to win the show, marking a major cultural moment. Viewers connected with 16-year-old Casey because she felt real and authentic, leading to her winning week after week. The star also went on to win I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! in 2017, reinforcing how loved this breakout star was and continues to be.

Anthony Callea’s ‘The Prayer’ performance
Anthony Callea’s The Prayer performance in the 2004 grand finale still goes down as one of the most iconic performances in Australian Idol history. This goosebumps moment brought judge Mark Holden to tears and led to Anthony’s version of The Prayer to become a major hit. Met with a standing ovation and praise online, this was one of those moments that reminded audiences why they started watching the show in the first place.
Jessica Mauboy’s 2006 audition
In 2006, 16-year-old Jessica Mauboy stunned judges with her performance of Chains by Tina Arena. This Kuku Yalanji and Wakaman woman from Darwin was immediately recognised as something special, and while she didn’t win, she went on to become one of Australian Idol’s biggest success stories.

Now a famous actress and singer (and returning guest judge for the 2026 season), Jessica has certainly captured the hearts of the Australian people, have been able to watch her rise since that very first audition.
