Broncos Legend Questions Club’s Handling of Assistant Coach’s Resignation Amidst Media Storm
The Brisbane Broncos have once again found themselves at the centre of a media frenzy, this time following the abrupt resignation of assistant coach Ben Te’o. Adding to the club’s woes, former Broncos captain Corey Parker has voiced his strong disapproval of the team’s decision to send an inexperienced player, Ben Talty, to address the press conference on the same day Te’o’s departure was confirmed.
The situation escalated on Tuesday when reports emerged of a verbal disagreement between head coach Michael Maguire and assistant Ben Te’o. Following a mediation session, the club officially announced Te’o’s resignation, a move that has reportedly come as a shock to both the playing squad and the wider fanbase.
Parker expressed his astonishment at the speed at which information concerning the internal conflict at the Broncos’ headquarters made its way to the public domain. Even Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy admitted on Wednesday that he was not privy to all the specifics surrounding the situation until Monday. Amidst the swirling speculation on Tuesday afternoon, it was Broncos forward Ben Talty who fronted the media to field questions.
Talty himself confessed to learning about the dispute between Maguire and Te’o via social media and was unable to offer any substantive comment on the matter. Parker found the decision to have Talty, who has only 11 NRL games under his belt, address the media on such a critical day to be highly questionable. He argued that the responsibility should have fallen to a more senior figure within the team, such as captain Adam Reynolds or another established leader.
“I want to know why some of these things haven’t been addressed,” Parker stated on Wednesday. “One of the answers I want from Dave Donaghy coming up is… have a listen to this from Ben Talty talking yesterday. The thing that was alarming to me, I love the Broncos, however, ‘I saw it on Instagram’. That to me, I am not sure.
“The second part to that, no disrespect to Ben Talty, but when your assistant coach has walked out and you put an 11-gamer to do media in such a big day? Put your captain up. One of your senior players, bang get in front of the media. That is no disrespect to Ben Talty.”
CEO Admits “Mystery” Surrounds Information Leak
Adding another layer to the unfolding drama, Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy acknowledged that the rapid dissemination of information from within the club was a “mystery.” He confirmed that he himself only became aware of the full details on Monday.
“From some of the conversations I have had, things moved quite quickly,” Donaghy told Parker. “We like to deal with these matters internally, but these things get out. It’s one of those mysteries. The full team was briefed yesterday, the timing of it I am not sure as to when. Certainly the whole team was briefed and was clear and what had taken place and how the rest of the week would look. Without getting specific, the first conversation I had around this was on Monday. I had heard there were challenges and that was from Ben. That conversation will stay private.
“It was certainly a surprise and then he tendered his resignation. Ben is an adult, he is a very good coach, he is clear on his decision and we respect that and we move on. We have a game to prep for on Friday night and we focus on that. Madge is supported by the other coaches. In due course, we will move quickly to fill that void.”
Donaghy confirmed that the Broncos will prioritise appointing a new assistant coach with immediate effect, following Te’o’s confirmed departure. The club is now focused on preparing for their upcoming match on Friday night.
