A New Breed of Luxury: The 2026 Lexus GX550 Arrives in Australia

Lexus is charting a unique course in the luxury SUV landscape, opting for rugged, off-road-capable hardware in a segment typically dominated by car-like, road-focused offerings. The arrival of the 2026 Lexus GX550 in Australia marks a significant moment, introducing a model with a long and storied history overseas to a new market.

Built on the same robust underpinnings as the Toyota LandCruiser Prado, the GX550 occupies a similar position in the Lexus lineup as the LX does to the LandCruiser. It inherits all the essential off-road prowess but elevates the experience with Lexus’s signature prestige in styling and interior appointments.

At a price point where competitors like the monocoque-platform Land Rover Defender and BMW X5 typically reign supreme, the GX550 deliberately deviates from the norm with its traditional body-on-frame construction. This design choice signals a vehicle better suited for adventurous off-road excursions than for an uncompromisingly refined on-road experience. However, this robust foundation hasn’t prevented Lexus from casting a wide net, offering dedicated “Overtrail” variants for the true adventurers, alongside more opulent high-end versions like the Sports Luxury, designed to cater to a more discerning clientele.

Lexus seems to be playing an “each-way bet” with the GX550. While the car-based RX SUV serves as a more direct rival to the likes of the BMW X5, Australia’s classification of the GX550 in the Upper Large SUV category places it against a broad spectrum of vehicles, from the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class to the svelte Aston Martin DBX.

The GX550 truly shines when there’s a horse float or caravan in tow. But what about owners who desire the commanding presence and practicality of a three-row luxury SUV without necessarily aspiring to the GX550’s heavy-duty capabilities? This is where the nuances of its positioning become particularly interesting.

Value Proposition: Is the Lexus GX550 Worth the Price Tag?

Lexus is offering the GX550 in Australia across three distinct variants, with pricing positioned quite closely together.

  • GX550 Luxury: The entry-level model starts at $118,320.
  • GX550 Sports Luxury: The variant tested here sits in the middle, priced at $124,840 before factoring in options, accessories, and on-road costs.
  • GX550 Overtrail: The top-spec Overtrail commands a price of $130,770.

Regardless of the chosen trim level, all GX550 models are powered by the same formidable 3.4-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 engine. Lexus markets it as a 3.5-litre, but the output remains consistent: a respectable 260kW of power and a substantial 650Nm of torque.

This powerhouse is paired with a 10-speed torque converter automatic transmission and a full-time four-wheel-drive system, complete with a low-range transfer case and a locking centre differential. While this hardware suggests serious off-road credentials, the 22-inch alloy wheels and highway-terrain tyres on the Sports Luxury might present a limiting factor for serious off-roading.

The braked towing capacity is rated at a decent 3130kg, though it falls short of being best-in-class. It’s important to note that the 22-inch wheels on the Sports Luxury result in the lowest tow capacity within the range; other variants boast a full 3500kg. However, opting for the optional 20-inch wheels on the Sports Luxury rectifies this, bringing the towing capacity back up to 3500kg.

Standard across all GX550 variants are a host of luxury and convenience features:

  • Powered front seats with heating and ventilation.
  • Heated second-row seats.
  • Wireless smartphone charging.
  • Head-up display.
  • Digital instrument cluster.
  • 14-inch infotainment system.
  • Powered tailgate.
  • 360-degree cameras.

The Luxury and Sports Luxury grades offer seven seats. The Sports Luxury further distinguishes itself with a range of exclusive enhancements, including:

  • Adaptive suspension.
  • Auto-foldaway side steps.
  • A fixed panoramic glass roof.
  • Genuine leather interior trim.
  • Massaging front seats.
  • An interior cool box.
  • Multi-colour interior ambient lighting.
  • A premium 21-speaker audio system.
  • Various other trim and appointment upgrades.

The additional features offered on the Sports Luxury grade appear to represent good value for the $6270 price increase over the Luxury model. Optional extras are limited to metallic paint ($1750) and an Enhancement Pack that swaps the 22-inch wheels for 20-inch units, thereby increasing towing capacity to 3500kg at no additional cost.

The only true alternative to consider within the GX550 range is the Overtrail grade. This variant prioritises off-road capability, adding features such as a swaybar disconnect, a locking rear differential, crawl control, and all-terrain tyres, clearly aimed at those who plan to push the vehicle’s limits beyond the tarmac.

Key Rivals in the Luxury Upper Large SUV Segment

When considering rivals, the Land Rover Defender 110 stands out as the closest competitor, offering a compelling blend of refinement and off-road prowess. The Defender 110 P425 X-Dynamic SE, priced at approximately $127,100 plus on-road costs, lines up closely with the GX550 in terms of price. It boasts a potent 313kW petrol V8 engine but, as standard, only offers seating for five, requiring additional options for more occupants.

General Motors offers the GMC Yukon Denali, which, while more of a direct competitor to the larger Lexus LX, is still worth considering. It’s a larger and significantly more expensive proposition at around $174,990 plus on-road costs. The Yukon’s trump card is its ability to seat up to eight passengers and its impressive towing capability of up to 3.6 tonnes.

Closer to home, the price point of the GX550 Sports Luxury could also secure a Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series VX. The LandCruiser, slightly larger than the GX, features a more fuel-efficient 3.3-litre turbo-diesel V6 engine and benefits from Toyota’s extensive dealer network, a crucial advantage for those venturing into remote areas. While perhaps not as overtly plush inside as the Lexus, the VX grade still offers a wealth of luxury appointments, coupled with greater cargo space and towing capacity.

Fuel Efficiency: A Thirsty Proposition

Despite Lexus’s strong focus on hybrid technology in other models, the V6 engine in the GX550 surprisingly lacks any form of hybrid assistance to improve fuel economy, and even omits an idle-stop system. The official claimed fuel consumption is 12.3 litres per 100 kilometres. During a week of predominantly highway driving, the GX550 achieved a real-world figure of 12.8L/100km. While not excessively high for a vehicle of its size, it can still be perceived as thirsty in isolation.

City driving, however, significantly amplifies fuel consumption. The claimed urban consumption figure stands at 17L/100km, but in heavy traffic, drivers can expect to see figures closer to the 20L/100km mark. With an 80-litre fuel tank, the tested cruising range on the highway would be approximately 625km. This range drastically reduces to around 470km based on the claimed urban consumption.

Ownership Costs: Warranty, Servicing, and Insurance

The Lexus GX550 comes with a five-year warranty for private buyers, with no kilometre limit. For commercial use, this is capped at 160,000km. Lexus also provides five years of roadside assistance and loan vehicle support under specific circumstances.

A significant drawcard of Lexus ownership is the brand’s Encore program, which covers the first three years of ownership. This program offers benefits such as a complimentary loan car during servicing, discounts at Ampol fuel stations, exclusive partner offers, event invitations, and roadside assistance for the duration of the Encore coverage.

Servicing costs are managed through Lexus’s capped-price program. However, unlike many rivals that offer 12-month service intervals, the GX550 requires scheduled servicing every six months or 10,000km. The cost per service is $695 for the first five years or 100,000km. While this might be an inconvenience for some, especially those who don’t intend to venture off-road, the more frequent intervals can be beneficial for owners who regularly tow or tackle challenging terrain, ensuring fresh fluids and filters are consistently maintained.

Over five years, the total servicing cost for the Lexus GX550 amounts to $6950. This positions it as a more expensive option compared to rivals. For instance, a Toyota LandCruiser would cost $4500 over the same period, while a Land Rover Defender’s servicing costs range from $3300 for a six-cylinder petrol to $3900 for a P425 V8, or $3500 for a six-cylinder diesel.

Comprehensive insurance premiums also vary. For the GX550, the estimated annual cost is $4072. This is notably higher than the LandCruiser VX, which comes in at a more affordable $2867 per year, and the Defender 110 P425 X-Dynamic SE, which is priced similarly to the Lexus at $3969.

Safety: A Familiar Foundation

The Lexus GX550 has yet to be officially crash-tested by Australasian safety authority ANCAP or its European counterpart, Euro NCAP. However, the Toyota Prado, which shares its chassis and key body structure with the GX550, achieved a five-star safety rating in 2024. While the two models are not identical, their close relationship provides a strong indication of the GX550’s potential safety performance.

The GX550 is equipped with nine airbags, including side airbags for the first and second rows, full-length curtain airbags, and a centre airbag between the front occupants. ISOFIX child seat mounts are available in the second row, but the third-row seats do not feature ISOFIX or top-tether mounts.

The vehicle’s electronic driver assist functions are designed to support the driver’s attention rather than take full control. While these systems can provide helpful nudges back into the lane, they do not offer semi-autonomous driving capabilities, meaning the driver remains firmly in control at all times. The system allows for movement within a lane, which can be useful for navigating potholes or maintaining the smoothest line on uneven roads. During testing, the driver assist systems demonstrated no false alerts, and the driver-facing attention monitoring camera only intervenes after a reasonable period of looking away from the road.

Exterior Design: Bold and Boxy

The GX550’s blocky profile immediately sets it apart from the more stylistically fluid smaller Lexus SUVs. Much of its bodywork is shared with the Toyota Prado, resulting in a similar overall shape, but with distinctive styling elements at the front and rear that lend it a unique Lexus identity.

Motorised side steps enhance accessibility, though their operation can be surprisingly noisy and clunky, lacking the premium feel one might expect. When retracted, the steps do not sit flush with the body, leaving visible panel gaps.

From certain angles, the design evokes the Land Rover Defender, but infused with a more aggressive Lexus aesthetic. The overall look powerfully communicates that this is a substantial SUV with rugged underpinnings, rather than a mere styling exercise.

The 22-inch wheels fitted to the Sports Luxury variant might appear slightly oversized for the vehicle’s intended purpose, but they do not adversely affect ride comfort. For buyers who plan to heavily utilise the GX550’s towing or off-roading capabilities, the optional Enhancement Pack is a worthwhile consideration. This pack replaces the 22-inch wheels with 20-inch units (sourced from the Luxury grade) and crucially increases the towing capacity to 3.5 tonnes.

Interior Comfort and Practicality: A Focus on Durability

The interior of the GX550 presents a conservative design, with materials that, at first glance, may not immediately convey the level of luxury expected for its price point. Lexus appears to have prioritised longevity and service life over outright sophistication and the use of plush materials.

In a segment where competitors like the Defender have successfully incorporated visible structural elements and exposed fixings, Lexus’s approach is not entirely out of step. However, some of the interior design choices feel less cutting-edge compared to car-based rivals in the same price bracket. While generous use of soft-touch plastics is found on less-touched areas of the dashboard, there’s a surprising lack of padding on the upper door trims, and hard surfaces are present where occupants’ knees might rest.

Front-seat occupants are treated to a commanding view of the road, aided by a high driving position, broad seats, and large windows. The seat padding is on the firmer side, upholstered in a fine-grain, soft, and smooth leather. While not offering a sink-in, lounge-like feel, the front seats provide ample support for long journeys.

The inclusion of front-seat massage functionality is a welcome addition, although accessing it requires navigating through the touchscreen menu, lacking a quick shortcut to activate the function.

The Sports Luxury grade boasts several exclusive interior features:

  • Front seat base-length adjustment.
  • A heated steering wheel.
  • Front seat ventilation (heating is standard across all models).
  • A kick-to-open power tailgate.
  • A panoramic glass roof with electrochromatic tinting and an electric blind.

For rear-seat passengers, there are separate climate controls and manually reclining rear seats. Air vents are integrated into the ceiling, and manual window shades on the doors help maintain comfort. However, rear-seat knee room is somewhat limited, particularly considering the GX550’s overall size. The seats themselves cannot be adjusted fore or aft. A one-touch button facilitates access to the third row by flipping the second-row seats forward, but a manual push is required to return them to their upright position.

The third-row seating offers surprisingly decent space, with adequate room in most directions for adults of average or below-average height. The seats in the third row are less plush and padded than those in the first two rows, making them feel less luxurious compared to offerings like the BMW X7.

Boot space is exceptionally generous. A car fridge would barely make a dent in the available volume. The third-row seats fold away electrically, making them easy to deploy when needed and creating a flat floor when stowed. The expansive, flat floor space means that investing in a boot caddy or organiser would be advisable to keep smaller items and groceries in check. With the third row in use, the boot space is naturally reduced, but there’s still sufficient room for backpacks or a couple of beach bags.

Infotainment System: A Well-Integrated Package

The 14-inch infotainment display in the GX550 is a prime example of effective system design, seamlessly blending physical controls with touchscreen functionality. The interface is bright, clear, and intuitive to understand.

The system responds swiftly to inputs and includes integrated satellite navigation, AM/FM/DAB radio, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. USB-C charge ports are conveniently located in each row, and a wireless charging pad is situated between the front seats.

Climate controls are managed via the screen, with dedicated sections permanently displayed for quick access. The temperature dials are physical knobs overlaid on the screen, complemented by hard buttons for front and rear demist functions only.

The driver faces a 12.3-inch instrument cluster that offers three distinct layout options. However, cycling through available information on the go is less intuitive than it could be, suggesting it’s best to configure the preferred layout before setting off.

A colour head-up display provides a straightforward overview of speed and other essential information, including speed sign recognition.

The 21-speaker sound system is impressive, delivering punchy, clear audio free from distortion. While not quite studio-grade in its crispness, it offers a satisfying listening experience. At very high volumes, some digital processing might subtly reduce bass to prevent distortion, potentially making music sound a little flat.

Lexus Connected Services are bundled with the vehicle for the first three years, with paid subscription options thereafter. Basic functions, such as checking the car’s lock status and vehicle location, are available without a subscription. However, features like remote start, remote lock, and connected navigation require one of two available paid packages after the initial three-year period, starting from $9.95 per month.

Driving Dynamics: A Blend of Comfort and Capability

On the road, the Lexus GX550 presents an intriguing and somewhat old-fashioned combination of soft suspension and torquey, albeit slow-revving, power delivery. The result is a vehicle that prioritises plushness but cannot entirely shed its heavy-duty origins. It’s not eerily silent, nor entirely free from a degree of body roll during dynamic manoeuvres.

The engine itself is a strong performer. While the availability of a diesel alternative, as offered in the larger LX, would be welcome, it’s difficult to fault the turbocharged V6’s power delivery. Torque is built up in a measured fashion, preventing any tendency for the vehicle to break traction mid-corner or feel overly brutish. Once within its mid-rev band, the engine pulls with the force of a freight train.

The 10-speed automatic transmission performs admirably, consistently selecting the appropriate gear. Unlike some 10-speed automatics that can exhibit hesitant shifting, Lexus has programmed this unit for smoother, more intelligent gear changes. In busy city traffic, it shifts almost imperceptibly. On the open road, it can execute rapid gear shifts during hard acceleration or intelligently maintain momentum on undulating terrain.

In addition to the default Normal mode, which suits most driving situations, there are Eco and Comfort modes, along with Sport S and Sport S+ settings. These sportier modes offer only a subtle sharpening of the vehicle’s response, still leaning towards refinement rather than overt sportiness. Manual gear selection is possible via steering wheel-mounted paddles or the gear lever itself. These are not designed for spirited driving on winding roads but rather to provide better control of the gearbox in off-road scenarios or while towing.

The Sports Luxury grade features adaptive suspension that works in conjunction with the selected driving modes. This allows the suspension to transition from remarkably soft in Comfort mode to significantly more settled in Sport S and Sport S+ modes.

The GX550 employs an independent double-wishbone front suspension, complemented by a rigid rear axle with a four-link rear design. Ride height is not adjustable; instead, the adaptive suspension alters the damping firmness. The combination of the solid rear axle and body-on-frame construction can lead to a noticeable jiggle over cross-axle articulation, resulting in a slightly wobbly and imprecise feel. This is an area where more car-like rivals tend to perform better.

The GX550’s blocky and bluff exterior shape can also contribute to wind noise and buffeting on the open road. While engine and tyre noise are exceptionally well-managed, the wind noise originating from the front of the vehicle can become noticeable.

Availability and Purchasing Options

At the time of writing, stock for the Lexus GX550 is somewhat limited, meaning there isn’t an extensive surplus of dealer inventory to choose from.

Prospective buyers can explore available Lexus GX550 models for sale on various online platforms. Given the model’s recent introduction, the availability of dealer demonstrator vehicles is scarce, and pre-owned examples are even harder to come by.

Alternatively, interested parties can contact dealers directly to place an order for their preferred trim level, colour, and specification. To locate your nearest authorised Lexus dealer, a search function is available.

For those seeking further information about the Lexus GX550, including the latest updates, offers, or specifications, dedicated resources are provided.

The Verdict: Should You Buy the Lexus GX550?

The Lexus GX550 carves out a distinct niche within the large luxury SUV segment, setting itself apart from offerings from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. While it certainly doesn’t lack sophistication, it approaches the concept of a luxury SUV from a fundamentally different perspective.

For Australian buyers, Lexus appears to have made a strategic decision, as the GX topped the Upper Large SUV over $120K sales category in 2025.

Buyers seeking a more sophisticated, fuel-efficient, and urban-centric package will find the RX series a more suitable option. However, for those who require a vehicle that is “rural-ready,” capable of towing significant loads, or designed with overlanding and touring comfort in mind, the GX550 presents a compelling solution.

While it may not be the ideal choice for every buyer, it is commendable to see a luxury SUV that embraces rugged construction for owners who have specific needs that this robust build can fulfil.
