Chelsea Football Club faces a challenging situation as striker Liam Delap suffers a shoulder injury, potentially sidelining him for a significant period. This setback has ignited discussions about Chelsea’s strategy for the upcoming January transfer window, particularly regarding their attacking options.
Delap, who is 22 years old, sustained the injury during the recent match against Bournemouth. The incident occurred after a challenge with Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi, forcing Delap to be substituted shortly after the half-hour mark. The extent of the injury is still being evaluated, but manager Enzo Maresca has indicated that it could keep Delap out of action for a considerable time.
“Unfortunately, he was already out for two months, and now he has to be out again,” Maresca stated following the goalless draw against Bournemouth. “We don’t know for how long, but it looks quite bad, his shoulder.” This news is undoubtedly a blow for both the player and the club, especially considering the approaching busy festive schedule and the team’s need to rebound after a series of games without a victory. Delap had previously been sidelined with a hamstring problem earlier in the season, compounding his frustration.
The injury to Delap has naturally led to speculation about potential reinforcements in the January transfer window. One name that has surfaced is Emanuel Emegha, a striker currently playing for Strasbourg.

Emegha, also 22, has been in impressive form for the French club this season, scoring seven goals in 11 appearances across all competitions. Strasbourg shares ownership with Chelsea under the BlueCo multi-club model, raising the possibility of expediting Emegha’s transfer to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea had previously agreed to bring Emegha to the club in the summer.
However, despite the potential synergy, reports suggest that Chelsea are not currently planning to bring Emegha in early. The club intends to adhere to the original agreement, keeping Emegha at Strasbourg until the summer transfer window. This decision reflects Chelsea’s confidence in their existing squad and their strategic approach to player acquisitions.

Emegha’s impressive performances have made him a key player for Strasbourg, where he also serves as captain. His impending move to Chelsea has already sparked some disappointment among Strasbourg fans, highlighting his value to the team.
Instead of rushing to bring in Emegha, Chelsea plans to rely on their current attacking options. This includes players like Joao Pedro and Marc Guiu, who are expected to step up and fill the void left by Delap’s injury.
- Joao Pedro: A versatile player capable of playing in multiple attacking positions.
Marc Guiu: The young Spaniard has already made a positive impact since being recalled from his loan spell.
Guiu, 19, was previously on loan at Sunderland when Delap suffered his initial injury. Chelsea recalled the young Spaniard, and he has since become a regular feature in the squad. He has made seven Premier League appearances and even scored in his Champions League debut against Ajax, showcasing his potential.

Another option for Chelsea is to utilize Pedro Neto as a false nine. Neto played this role effectively in the recent 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League, demonstrating his adaptability and tactical awareness.
Neto’s versatility and goal-scoring ability make him a valuable asset for Chelsea. He is currently the Blues’ joint top-scorer in all competitions this season, alongside Estevao and Enzo Fernandez, with five goals. This highlights his importance to the team’s attacking output.
The decision to rely on existing players rather than making immediate signings in January indicates Chelsea’s belief in the depth and quality of their squad. While Delap’s injury is undoubtedly a setback, the club is confident that they have the resources to navigate the busy festive period and maintain their competitive edge. The focus will be on maximizing the potential of players like Pedro, Guiu, and Neto, while also carefully evaluating long-term transfer targets for the summer window.
