Legal Proceedings Evolve in Alan Jones Indecent Assault Case
The criminal case against veteran broadcaster Alan Jones has seen a significant development with prosecutors electing to drop one of the charges less than two months before his trial is set to commence. This move effectively reduces the number of complainants involved in the indecent assault proceedings.
Mr. Jones, aged 85, has maintained his plea of not guilty and vehemently denies all accusations levelled against him. The charges initially encompassed 25 counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual touching, relating to a total of nine complainants. His trial was slated to begin in the Local Court in early August.
However, in a Sydney Downing Centre court on Tuesday, it was revealed that proceedings concerning one of the complainants are to be withdrawn and dismissed. The specific charge no longer being pursued by the prosecution is an allegation of assault with an act of indecency. Court documents indicate this charge stemmed from an incident alleged to have occurred in 2013, where Mr. Jones was accused of “touched and grabbed the complainant on his bottom during an event.” As this was the sole charge pertaining to this particular complainant, its withdrawal consequently lowers the total number of complainants in the case from nine to eight.
The upcoming trial will now focus on allegations of incidents that allegedly took place between 2001 and 2019, all of which Mr. Jones continues to deny.
This latest development represents the second substantial alteration to the structure of the case. Previously, in September, 11 counts of aggravated indecent assault were substituted with less severe offences. This revision also led to a reduction in the number of complainants by two. A notable consequence of these earlier changes was that the proceedings would be heard in the Local Court before a magistrate, rather than in the District Court before a jury. At that time, Mr. Jones’s legal representative, Bryan Wrench, characterised the restructuring as a “downgrade.”
