Sam Docherty’s Return to Carlton Amid Controversy
Sam Docherty has been welcomed back into the Carlton fold, with captain Patrick Cripps confirming there are no hard feelings towards the retired star despite his expletive-laden criticism of the club. Docherty, a two-time testicular cancer survivor, was known for his candid remarks, which were recently brought to light after a private voice message was leaked by former teammate Daniel Gorringe.
The message, which described Carlton as a “fing sshow,” led to Docherty being withdrawn from speaking duties at a club function the following week. However, he recently made an appearance at the launch of the annual charity match between Carlton and Collingwood, supporting the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation. This event is a significant moment for the club, highlighting the importance of community support and the power of coming together during tough times.
Cripps emphasized the special nature of this game, noting that Docherty’s personal journey with cancer adds an extra layer of significance. “We saw what he went through with his battle and we also saw the power of community when people come together to support a mate when they need it,” Cripps said. “That’s why this round’s so special. It puts a spotlight on things that are much bigger than the game itself.”
Docherty’s criticism, which was unintentionally shared online, sparked a wave of scrutiny around Carlton, particularly regarding their performance this season. The Blues have struggled against their traditional rivals, Collingwood, with the Magpies winning the last four meetings and seven of the last eight since 2022. This season has been challenging for Carlton, with a 1-4 record heading into their clash with Collingwood at the MCG on Thursday night.

Cripps expressed his determination to change this trend, stating, “There’s nothing more that I love than beating the Pies.” He acknowledged the pressure to win against their rivals but emphasized the importance of focusing on the team’s performance. “We’re well aware that they’ve probably had the wood on us the last couple of years but we’re looking to change that on Thursday.”

In addition to the rivalry with Collingwood, Carlton faced another challenge when reigning best-and-fairest winner George Hewett was dropped for last week’s loss to Adelaide. Cripps supported Hewett’s return, acknowledging the hard work he puts in and the positive energy he brings to the team. “He created a real positive energy, which is what you want to see when guys don’t get the opportunity,” Cripps said. “I’ve got a lot of respect for him and he’ll play a lot of footy for us this year.”
Cripps also deferred questions about team selection to coach Michael Voss, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus on the game. “You feel for him because you see the work he puts in and he put the team ahead of everything because of the way he showed up,” he added. This approach highlights the team’s commitment to unity and resilience, even in the face of challenges.
