Two years after one of the most tragic mass casualty events in Sydney’s history, remarkable individuals who showed incredible bravery have been acknowledged for their selfless actions during the attack at Bondi Junction Westfield in 2024. The event, which claimed six lives, saw ordinary people step up to save strangers, and now eight of them have been recognised with special Australian Bravery Decorations by Governor-General Sam Mostyn.
Among the recipients are a nurse who refused to leave the side of the injured and “bollard man,” whose actions helped stop the attacker. Here is a look at those who risked their lives to protect others.
Bravery Medals
Inside the shopping centre, as chaos unfolded, Silas Despréaux and Damien Guerot took action. They tracked the attacker, Joel Cauchi, across multiple levels, using metal bollards as makeshift weapons. Their efforts were crucial in slowing down the attacker and guiding a police officer back into the building. They remained close behind as the chase continued, demonstrating extraordinary courage under pressure.
Detective Inspector Amy Scott, already on duty nearby, responded to urgent radio calls and entered the centre alone. She followed Cauchi through the building before taking the decisive action that ended the attack with a gunshot.
Meanwhile, security guards Muhammad Taha and Faraz Tahir attempted to intervene when they heard reports of an armed man near the airbridge. Both men were stabbed during their efforts to protect others, with Mr Tahir losing his life in the process.
Ashlee Good, a 38-year-old mother, was attacked while out shopping with her baby. Despite her injuries, she managed to get her child to safety with the help of bystanders before collapsing. Her bravery and determination earned her a posthumous honour.
Commendation for Brave Conduct
Noel McLaughlin, upon receiving a call that his wife had been stabbed, ran through the centre, warning others about the attacker before reaching her. He provided first aid until she succumbed to her injuries.
Nurse Catherine Molihan made a critical decision to leave a locked store where people had taken refuge. She stepped back into danger to treat two wounded men, remaining with them until help arrived. Her actions exemplify the compassion and dedication of healthcare professionals in crisis situations.
In a statement, the Governor-General highlighted the selflessness and courage displayed by all the recipients. “We also pay tribute to the 12 people injured, for their recovery and well-being, and all those whose lives were changed forever by the violence they witnessed on that terrible day,” she said.
