Carlton’s Defensive Dilemma and Key Players in Focus
Carlton defender Nick Haynes is set to make a return to the AFL as coach Michael Voss considers how to replace All-Australian player Jacob Weitering. The Blues vice-captain suffered a concussion during the loss to North Melbourne, joining young tall Harry Dean in the concussion protocols. This situation has created an opportunity for other players to step up and fill the void left by Weitering’s absence.
Running defender Adam Saad is also being considered for the upcoming match after showing strong performances in the VFL. Meanwhile, Cooper Lord trained on Tuesday following his recovery from a staph infection that kept him in the hospital for four nights. These developments highlight the challenges the team faces in maintaining a balanced lineup.
Voss acknowledged the difficulty of replacing Weitering, who has been a crucial part of the team. “We won’t disclose all of it, but obviously, without ‘Weiters,’ we need to replace that pillar,” he said. He noted that Weitering is recovering well and is progressing through his own protocols. “Now it’s about the game and the next player that comes in; we’ll work out what that balance looks like.”
A New Look at the Lineup
Derksen came into the team last week, while Youngy played more in the ruck. Voss mentioned that they will discuss the split of roles moving forward. Haynes has had a few games under his belt and is getting closer to being ready for action. There are several other players in a similar position. Saady isn’t a tall player, but he showed good form in the weekend, which was encouraging to see.
Other players could also be in contention if the opportunity arises. Will Hayward, a forward, is facing a suspension at the Tribunal on Tuesday, which could lead to further changes in the lineup. Despite Adelaide’s strong forward line, Lewis Young is expected to remain in the ruck instead of returning permanently to defense, given Weitering’s absence.
Liam Reidy, the ruckman, will not be available for selection after accepting a one-match suspension for a strike in the VFL. This adds more uncertainty to Carlton’s team selection. Flynn Young could potentially break into the senior side after another strong performance in the reserves. Hudson O’Keeffe is also an option to assist Marc Pittonet with the ruck duties.
Young, who is in line to replace Hayward if he is found guilty, recorded 21 disposals, 11 marks, and kicked three goals. His performance highlights the potential of emerging talent within the team.
Staying Focused Amid Pressure
Despite the challenges, Voss remains focused on the task at hand. He insists that he is not distracted by the immense pressure surrounding his future as the Carlton coach after a disappointing opening month, which resulted in only one victory. The team has struggled with second-half fadeouts, failing to prevent the opposition from taking control.
During the long break against North Melbourne, Vision captured former Port Adelaide player and Carlton staffer Travis Boak talking to the players, which led to a better response in the third term. However, this improvement was not sustained, as the team managed only two goals to seven.
“I don’t pay any attention to it,” Voss said. “At some point in time you’ve just got to get on with the task at hand, and that’s what we’re doing. I’m not distracted off anything other than just getting the best out of the team and supporting them as best we possibly can to make the progress we need.”
