Media Mogul Steps Down Amid Serious Allegations, Enters Rehab
A prominent figure in the Australian media landscape, Antony Catalano, co-owner and chairman of Australian Community Media (ACM), is facing serious charges following an alleged assault in Melbourne. The allegations include dragging a woman through an apartment and threatening her with a clothes iron. In the wake of these accusations, Mr. Catalano has been stood down from his position and has announced his immediate intention to enter a rehabilitation program.
The alleged incident, which occurred on Friday, has sent shockwaves through the industry. The Melbourne Magistrates’ Court heard that the woman involved suffered a fractured tailbone and required hospitalisation as a result of the alleged assault. Mr. Catalano has been formally charged with assault, false imprisonment, and making threats to kill. Following the charges, ACM placed him on an indefinite leave of absence from his leadership role.
In a candid statement, Mr. Catalano acknowledged the gravity of the allegations and expressed deep remorse for the distress caused. He stated, “I am deeply ashamed and humiliated. I know that my actions have caused hurt and concern for others, including the woman involved, my family, friends, colleagues and the many people connected to the businesses I have been privileged to lead.”
Mr. Catalano revealed that he has been contending with significant mental health challenges and issues with substance abuse. He admitted that those close to him had been urging him to seek professional help for some time, and that interventions by family and friends had taken place. Until these recent events, he confessed, he had not heeded this advice.
“In light of recent events, I have now accepted that I need help and I will be checking myself into a rehabilitation program immediately,” Mr. Catalano declared. He further elaborated on his commitment to recovery by announcing a six-month leave of absence from all professional responsibilities. This period will be dedicated entirely to treatment and his personal recovery journey.
The statement from Mr. Catalano was subsequently published by The Canberra Times, an ACM-owned publication, on Saturday evening.
ACM Board Responds to Allegations
The board of Australian Community Media issued its own statement on Sunday, expressing profound concern and shock regarding the allegations against Mr. Catalano. A spokesperson for ACM stated, “Mr. Catalano is facing charges involving alleged violence towards a woman. While these are allegations that will be determined by the court, violence against women is entirely against the values of our company and our mastheads.”
The company assured stakeholders that Mr. Catalano’s temporary absence would not disrupt the daily operations of ACM. The spokesperson clarified that as executive chair, his role was not operational, suggesting that day-to-day management would continue seamlessly.
Bail Conditions and Court Proceedings
During the initial court appearance on Friday, police had argued for Mr. Catalano to be denied bail and remanded in custody. Their submission was based on the perceived unacceptable risk of further offending and the possibility of him fleeing the state of Victoria.
However, Mr. Catalano’s legal representative, Jason Gullaci SC, presented a defence highlighting his client’s status as a father of nine and his unblemished criminal record. Mr. Gullaci also pointed to Mr. Catalano’s “significant” property and business interests as factors that would preclude him from absconding. Furthermore, it was noted that certain specific allegations, such as the forceful swinging of the iron at the woman’s head, were not detailed in the written police summary presented to the court.
Magistrate Rohan Lawrence ultimately granted Mr. Catalano bail, subject to a series of stringent conditions. The court has adjourned the case until May 11 for further proceedings.
