Canterbury Bulldogs Coach Questions Penalty Calls After NRL Loss
Canterbury Bulldogs head coach Cameron Ciraldo has raised concerns about the number of penalties his team faced during a tense Good Friday match against the South Sydney Rabbitohs. The Bulldogs suffered a narrow defeat in a game that saw them fall behind early, take the lead, and then collapse late in front of 45,000 fans at the stadium.
The match was a rollercoaster for the Bulldogs, who struggled throughout the second half. Despite showing resilience, they turned the ball over 17 times and made some questionable tactical decisions, including Ciraldo’s choice to play Sean O’Sullivan instead of Bronson Xerri after Stephen Crichton suffered a shoulder injury.
Ciraldo focused on the penalty count, which ended 8-2 in favor of the Rabbitohs. Speaking after the game, he suggested that the officials’ decisions might not have been entirely fair.
“I’d be silly not to [talk to the NRL about the penalties],” Ciraldo said. “We’ve got to learn from it. There’s probably some things in there that we can control and do better, but there’s probably a few we could have got as well I reckon at some stage.”
He added, “I’m going to have to have a look at them, but I’m not sure how much of it we could control. The fact you’re asking me if they’re contentious probably means they are, but I don’t know, I’m sitting up in the box.”
Ciraldo highlighted that the Bulldogs were penalized six or seven times in the second half, while the Rabbitohs completed 24 sets in a row. This lack of possession and field position put the Bulldogs at a disadvantage.
“Then at the end there was just too many fatigue errors on the back of that,” he said.
Despite the loss, Ciraldo expressed pride in his team’s effort. He noted that the Bulldogs showed great determination when everything seemed to be going against them, even managing to score a last-minute try that demonstrated their never-give-up attitude.
“The reality is we got penalised six or seven times in the second half. They completed 24 sets straight, so they did a great job with that. And we had no possession, no field position. Then at the end there was just too many fatigue errors on the back of that.”
Challenges Facing the Bulldogs
Ciraldo has faced criticism in recent weeks for not making necessary changes to his team. The Bulldogs scored 24 points in the match against the Rabbitohs, marking their highest score of the season. However, this still left them with a total of 69 points from four games, raising questions about their performance.
The team, currently in the mix for a top-four finish, will face the Penrith Panthers next weekend. The Panthers are in strong form, and the upcoming clash will be a crucial test for the Bulldogs.
