Farrel Hagerty’s Return and Departure from Coronation Street
Farrel Hagerty has once again stepped away from the set of Coronation Street, confirming her exit from the long-running ITV soap after a brief return earlier this year. The actress, known for her role as Lou Michaelis, first joined the show in February 2025 and left in July of the same year. She made a comeback in January 2026, only to step back out now.
Speaking on the Girlfriend Material podcast, Farrel revealed that she has stopped filming for the show. “I’m out of the show now. I’ve stopped filming,” she said. “I came back in Corrie for a short stint. I was in it for six months and I came back because my character is in prison. She’s not a good girl.”
This news comes after reports in April 2025 indicated that Farrel was leaving her role on the soap. Her departure coincides with that of Joe Layton, who plays her husband, Mick. According to a source quoted in The Sun, both actors were brought onto the show as a couple and will leave together. “They were bought on as a couple and will leave as such,” the source said. “Fans were hoping they would be around for a while, but there are no plans to keep them on longer than first intended.”
A spokesperson for Coronation Street confirmed to the publication that Mick and Lou were introduced to cause chaos on the cobbles in the lead-up to a major storyline in the summer. They added that both actors are still filming and will appear on screen until the summer. According to The Sun, their final scenes are expected to be filmed next month before they leave the show permanently.
Reception of Lou Michaelis
Lou’s loud personality drew comparisons to Coronation Street icon Janice Battersby, portrayed by Vicky Entwistle. However, many fans were critical of the character, with some calling for her to be axed from the show. One fan described the characters as “the worst ever to grace the cobbles,” while another criticized them as “absolutely dreadful” and “written horribly.”
Before their exits were announced, fans had already expressed frustration with the pair. One wrote: “Not entertaining in any way. Awful, awful, awful.” Another remarked: “Potentially up there as the worst new characters ever for me. A real sign of the s*** show that is Corrie in the 2020s.”
Lou’s arrival on the street was marked by her friendship with Gemma Winter Brown, played by Dolly-Rose Campbell. She and Mick moved into a house on the other side of the ginnel, which had never been used in the show before.

Joe Layton’s Departure and Future Plans
It was recently reported that Joe Layton would also be leaving his role as Mick. An insider told The Mirror that Mick’s character will remain on screen until late July, with the soap source teasing there is “lots more to come.”
Joe initially described joining Coronation Street as a dream come true. “Coronation Street is such an institute in British television,” he said. “To get to walk down the cobbles in Mick’s shoes is so exciting. To also do it alongside Farrel is awesome — we are having great fun together and connecting really well whilst developing our characters.”
He also highlighted the opportunity to work with experienced professionals. “It’s just a really happy place, friendly and welcoming. I’m going to relish every moment of it.”
Discussing his villain role, Joe expressed excitement about portraying a complex character. “I really enjoy playing what people would refer to as a baddie or a villain,” he said. “For me, the most interesting thing is how we move past the first initial judgment of them.”

Final Thoughts
As both Farrel and Joe prepare to leave the show, fans are left wondering what impact their characters will have on future storylines. Their time on Coronation Street has been marked by controversy, but also by the potential for dramatic twists.
Coronation Street continues to air on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
