The NSW Blues are facing a crucial decision regarding the availability of key players Mitchell Moses and Stephen Crichton for the upcoming King’s Birthday clash. While both are anticipated to be named for their Round 14 match, injury concerns cast a shadow over their participation in the pivotal Game Two of the State of Origin series.

Moses’s Potential Return and Strange’s Impressive Debut
Despite Ethan Strange delivering a standout performance in Game One as five-eighth, Blues coach Laurie Daley openly discussed the prospect of Mitchell Moses reclaiming his spot. Speaking on Channel 7’s Agenda Setters, Daley acknowledged Moses’s crucial contribution.
“We all know what a quality player Mitch Moses is, and he’s a big part of the team,” Daley commented. “His style of footy – with his kicking game, his ability to organise, and pass – is different to Ethan’s. But if they’re both fit, they’ll both be there somewhere.”
Ethan Strange was versatile during the team camp, preparing in multiple positions. “Ethan trained a bit at centre, fullback, five-eighth, and lock. He didn’t really have many reps going into Origin I, so his performance was outstanding,” Daley elaborated. His readiness, alongside Casey McLean, played a vital role in the game’s outcome.
Crichton’s Injury Woes and McLean’s Rising Stock
Stephen Crichton’s availability against the Eels is in doubt due to a reaggravation of his shoulder injury, initially classified as Grade 5 on Good Friday. In contrast, Casey McLean is making a strong case for selection after his solid 23-minute stint against the Maroons.
McLean was formidable in the Panthers’ victory over the Warriors, recording two tries, 18 runs, 158 metres gained, and 55 post-contact metres. Daley stressed the need for full information on Crichton’s condition before finalizing the Game Two squad. “You don’t want to take someone in that’s underdone,” he explained.
Other Players in Contention for Game Two
Beyond immediate injury concerns, Jacob Kiraz and Liam Martin, returning from an MCL injury, are in contention. A three-way race for the utility hooker position is also emerging between Api Koroisau, Wayde Egan, and Connor Watson to replace the injured Blayke Brailey.
Game Two of the State of Origin series takes place on June 17 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. These selection decisions will significantly shape the NSW Blues’ strategy.
