Star Wide Receiver Stefon Diggs Faces Legal Battles Amidst Super Bowl Fallout
New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs is navigating a challenging period, facing both legal scrutiny and speculation surrounding his personal life, all in the wake of a disappointing Super Bowl loss. The star player recently made a significant change to his legal representation just days before a scheduled court appearance.
The legal proceedings stem from an alleged incident in December, where Diggs was accused of physically assaulting his female chef at his home during a financial dispute. The charges filed against the 32-year-old are felony strangulation or suffocation, alongside misdemeanor assault and battery. Diggs has consistently denied these allegations through his legal counsel.
Previously represented by David E. Meier and Michael R. DiStefano, court documents now indicate that Sara Silva has taken over as Diggs’ attorney. The Daily Mail has reportedly reached out to Silva for confirmation regarding this change.
The court appearance, initially slated for January, was postponed to Friday due to the Patriots’ deep run into the Super Bowl. It is anticipated that Diggs will enter a plea after the formal charges are read in court. His former legal team had previously indicated efforts to resolve the matter through a financial settlement with the accuser, whom the Daily Mail has chosen not to identify.

According to the Dedham police department, the alleged altercation occurred during the early months of Diggs’ tenure with the Patriots. The woman in question, who worked as his personal chef, reportedly accused Diggs of striking and choking her amidst a financial disagreement.
Adding to his legal woes, Diggs has also been named in an unrelated defamation lawsuit. This separate action originates from an incident in Florida in 2024, where a former business partner claims Diggs falsely accused him of stealing a Ferrari. The plaintiff further alleges that he was assaulted at a nightclub in 2025 as a consequence of these purported false allegations.
Teammate Also Faces Domestic Assault Charges
In a separate but concerning development, Diggs’ Patriots teammate, Christian Barmore, is also facing legal trouble. Barmore has been charged with misdemeanor domestic assault and battery on a family or household member in Attleboro, Massachusetts. Reports indicate that he allegedly grabbed his then-girlfriend during a dispute in August and threw her to the ground.
Super Bowl Struggles and Future Uncertainty
The legal and personal drama unfolds against the backdrop of a difficult Super Bowl performance for Diggs. In the Patriots’ 29-13 defeat to the Super Bowl-champion Seattle Seahawks, Diggs recorded a mere three receptions on three targets. A notable moment from the game saw him involved in a physical altercation with Seattle defensive back Josh Jobe, resulting in Diggs receiving a punch to the head after a facemask jostle.
This performance, coupled with a significant partially-guaranteed $28 million cap hit, has raised questions about his future with the Patriots in Foxborough beyond the upcoming season. Despite these challenges, Diggs has publicly expressed his desire to remain with the team. In the post-game locker room, he stated, “I hope so,” when asked about his return.
Relationship Rumours Swirl with Cardi B
Beyond the football field and the courtroom, there are also reports of drama surrounding Diggs’ relationship with rapper Cardi B. Speculation has surfaced suggesting the couple may have split following the birth of their first child, a son. Adding fuel to these rumours, both Diggs and Cardi B have recently unfollowed each other on social media platforms.
Following days of intense speculation, Diggs posted a cryptic message on Instagram, disabling comments on the post. The message read: “Gratitude and Fear cannot coexist in the same space… a reminder to control what you can control, remain thankful and stay motivated.” The accompanying photos featured images from the Patriots’ playoff run, including several of him arriving at games.

Cardi B’s behaviour before the Super Bowl also drew attention. When asked by an ESPN reporter for an “inspiring message to Stefon,” the Grammy-winning rapper, 33, appeared unenthusiastic, offering a curt “Good luck” before walking away.
Further hints of a potential separation emerged when Cardi B shared a recap of her Super Bowl game day experience on Instagram. Many fans noted the absence of any direct mention of Diggs. Instead, she posted videos of herself dancing and her attendance at Bad Bunny’s halftime performance. Photos of her Airbnb stay also appeared to lack any sign of her boyfriend.

Her social media activity, which focused on the “energy” of the Super Bowl and the halftime show, and her caption about enjoying her time and taking the energy back to her Airbnb for a photoshoot, further fuelled fan speculation about a breakup. The post concluded with three red heart emojis, with no further comment on the game itself.
The couple has been linked since early last year, making their relationship public in May when they were seen together at a New York Knicks game. The recent social media unfollowing and the perceived distance during the Super Bowl have led to widespread speculation among fans and media alike.
