A Generous Gift: Former Eagle Spreads Holiday Cheer with Shopping Sprees and Groceries
The spirit of giving was in full bloom this holiday season as former Philadelphia Eagle, Joel Gamble, orchestrated a heartwarming event that brought smiles to the faces of 20 deserving children in South Philadelphia. Dubbed “December to Remember,” the initiative provided each child with a $200 holiday shopping spree at a local Walmart, alongside an additional $100 in grocery assistance for their families, courtesy of a dedicated local foundation.
This special holiday surprise was more than just a shopping trip; it was a recognition of academic achievement and a powerful demonstration of community support. The young recipients, all students at Andrew Hamilton School, were celebrated for their hard work and dedication to their studies.
An Early Christmas for Young Achievers
The excitement was palpable as Joel Gamble, CEO of Joel Gamble Community Youth Outreach, announced the generous gift to the gathered families. “The surprise… all 20 students in this room are gonna get a $200 shopping spree for Christmas!” he declared, met with enthusiastic applause. The event was a testament to the belief that investing in youth and recognizing their efforts can have a profound impact.
Before the shopping began, Gamble, alongside fellow former NFL players Brandon Hepburn, Desmond Wynn, and Nydair Rouse, took the time to offer words of encouragement to the children. Their presence underscored a shared commitment to giving back and inspiring the next generation.
“Just that people do care, people want to give back,” Gamble emphasized, highlighting the core message of the event.
Beyond the Presents: Addressing Family Needs
The generosity extended beyond the individual shopping sprees. Nydair Rouse, who also serves as a community director at It Takes a Village to Feed One Child Foundation, ensured that families wouldn’t have to worry about stocking their pantries for the holidays. “I know I grew up with food insecurity and stuff like that,” Rouse shared, revealing a personal connection to the importance of providing essential resources. The $100 in grocery assistance for each family was a crucial addition, offering tangible relief and support.
A Tradition of Giving Back, Rooted in Community
This year marked the eighth iteration of Gamble’s “December to Remember” event, a tradition that began in Baltimore, Maryland, during his NFL career. The initiative has consistently aimed to spread joy and provide much-needed support to families during the often-challenging holiday season. Its return to Philadelphia, Gamble’s adopted football home, resonated deeply with the local community.
Voices of Excitement and Gratitude
The children themselves were brimming with anticipation. Nine-year-old Simone Keyes, a fourth-grader at Andrew Hamilton School, articulated her excitement. “I’m looking for art supplies and a little jewelry and I’m happy because I actually did a lot of writing in school and reading at school, so I’m excited for it,” she exclaimed. Her parents, Sheri Castle and Rodney Keyes, beamed with pride, recognizing their daughter’s academic efforts being rewarded.
Dr. Torrence Rothmiller, the principal of Andrew Hamilton School, expressed his honor at being part of the event. “Our students here have over 95 percent attendance or more and we are honored to be here with them,” he stated, highlighting the dedication of the students who were selected to participate. The selection process focused on recognizing students who demonstrated consistent effort and positive engagement in their academic pursuits.
The “December to Remember” event serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that athletes and community leaders can have when they choose to invest in the well-being and future of young people. It’s an initiative that not only provides material gifts but also fosters a sense of hope, encouragement, and belonging, truly embodying the spirit of the holiday season.
