Enugu State Embarks on Ambitious Urban Road Infrastructure Overhaul
The Enugu State Government has unveiled a comprehensive plan to construct and reconstruct a staggering 1,022 urban roads, underscoring Governor Peter Mbah’s administration’s commitment to transforming the road network within the Enugu metropolis by the conclusion of his current term. This significant undertaking was a key highlight of a recent Enugu State Executive Council meeting.
Following the council session, key officials briefed Government House correspondents on the far-reaching decisions made. Dr. Malachy Agbo, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, alongside Engr. Osita Okoh, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, and Dr. Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo, the Commissioner for Trade, Investment and Industry, shared details of the approved initiatives. Beyond infrastructure, the council also greenlit the Business Enabling Reform Action Plan for 2026 and outlined plans for a vibrant “Detty December” celebration, promising an unforgettable festive season for residents and visitors alike.
Paving the Way: A Multi-Phase Road Development Strategy
Engr. Osita Okoh elaborated on the ambitious road project, emphasizing the strategic utilization of the dry season to maximize construction efficiency. The plan involves awarding contracts early, with contractors scheduled to commence work on various sites from January 2026. This phased approach has already seen the successful completion of the first phase, which encompassed over 90 roads, and a second phase that surpassed its initial target of 141 urban roads.
The current, third phase is designed to address all remaining unpaved roads within the Enugu metropolis. This expansive project will reach numerous key areas, including:

Dr. Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo provided insights into the Business Enabling Reform Action Plan for 2026, highlighting its crucial role in fostering a more conducive business ecosystem in Enugu. He proudly announced a remarkable improvement in the state’s ranking in the national ease of doing business survey, moving from a concerning 36th position to an impressive 6th.

Dr. Ogbu-Nwobodo explained that by streamlining processes in key areas such as land administration, tax administration, permit acquisition, and government-to-business interactions, Enugu is creating a transparent and predictable environment.
