Sentry Insurance Lands Coveted Title Sponsorship at Torrey Pines
Golf aficionados in San Diego are in for a treat as Sentry Insurance has officially stepped in as the new title sponsor for the prestigious tournament at Torrey Pines. This move marks a significant shift, with Sentry transitioning from its long-standing eight-year tenure at Kapalua to the iconic Pacific Ocean-adjacent course in La Jolla. The tournament, now rebranded as “The Sentry,” is set to tee off from January 27th to 30th next year, utilising both the North and South courses at Torrey Pines. This historic municipal venue has been a staple on the PGA Tour schedule since 1968.
A strategic adjustment has been made to the tournament’s schedule, with the final round now slated for Saturday. This decision aims to avoid any direct competition with the highly anticipated NFL conference championship games, ensuring golf fans can fully immerse themselves in the action without divided loyalties.
Looking further ahead, the exact positioning of The Sentry within the PGA Tour’s revamped schedule, potentially as early as 2028, is still to be finalised. However, it is confirmed that for the 2027 season, the tournament will serve as the second event of the year, taking place just one week after The American Express, which is held approximately two hours away in La Quinta, California.
Sentry Insurance, a Wisconsin-based company, had been a dedicated title sponsor at Kapalua, Hawaii, since 2018. Initially, the Kapalua tournament featured a winners-only field, a format that later expanded to include the top 50 players from the FedEx Cup standings. Unfortunately, the tournament was not held in 2026 due to a significant water dispute on Maui, which cast doubt on the readiness of the Plantation course.
This unfortunate circumstance led the PGA Tour to re-evaluate its traditional “Hawaii swing,” which included both Kapalua and the Sony Open on Oahu. In the wake of this restructuring, Sentry found a prime new home at Torrey Pines, a move that became possible when Farmers Insurance decided not to renew its title sponsorship of the San Diego event.
The San Diego golf tournament boasts a rich history, dating back to 1952. The upcoming 2027 event will mark the 60th occasion that Torrey Pines has hosted this esteemed competition. The course itself is no stranger to hosting major championships, having previously welcomed the U.S. Open in both 2008 and 2021, further cementing its status as a world-class golfing venue.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan expressed his enthusiasm for the new partnership. “For 75 years, the PGA Tour has brought elite competition to San Diego, with 60 of those years being at the revered Torrey Pines,” Monahan stated in a release. “We are incredibly proud to build upon this rich legacy and the significant philanthropic impact we’ve achieved with our partners at Sentry Insurance.”
The day-to-day operations of the tournament will remain under the capable stewardship of The Century Club of San Diego. This arrangement contrasts with recent sponsorship changes at other events, such as the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow and the Cognizant Classic of the Palm Beaches, where the PGA Tour’s Championship Management arm took over organisational duties.
Marty Gorsich, CEO of The Century Club of San Diego, conveyed his excitement about the collaboration. “We are thrilled to forge this partnership with Sentry, a company that has been a longstanding supporter of the PGA Tour and is widely recognised for its commitment to impactful community engagement,” Gorsich commented.
The most recent edition of the Farmers Insurance Open in January saw Justin Rose clinch victory with a remarkable performance. He achieved a record-breaking score of 23-under par 265, securing a commanding seven-shot win. Rose also etched his name in the history books by becoming the first player to lead the tournament from wire-to-wire at Torrey Pines.
