Footballer Injured as Spectator Fence Collapses During Match Celebration
A distressing incident occurred during a recent football match in Melbourne when a player sustained a knee injury after a spectator fence gave way amidst a fervent on-field celebration. The Melbourne Knights player, Darcy Anastovski, was forced off the pitch after being struck by the collapsing barrier as his teammates and fans converged to celebrate a crucial moment in the game against fierce rivals FC Melbourne Srbija.
The match, held at Tompsett Stadium, saw Luka Kolic, a former Melbourne United midfielder, open the scoring. In the immediate aftermath of the goal, players from Kolic’s team rushed towards the sidelines to share in the jubilation with their supporters. However, as hundreds of Knights fans surged forward, eager to get closer to the players, the fence separating the stands from the playing area buckled under the pressure and collapsed.

Anastovski, unfortunately, found himself in the direct path of the falling structure, with the fence landing on his leg. Social media platforms were quickly abuzz with concern for the young player. One spectator on X (formerly Twitter) commented, “Apparently quite a serious knee injury,” while another added, “Poor guy did his ACL I heard. Hope the young lad is ok, chaotic scenes.”

This incident has raised questions about the safety of the stadium’s infrastructure, with several Knights supporters highlighting past issues with the same fence. On X, one user posted, “That fence is always breaking,” suggesting a recurring problem. A more detailed concern was raised on Facebook, stating, “The Knights need to something about the fence on Quarry Hill. That is the second time it has collapsed due to a surge of fans. This time a player had his knee injured.”
In response to these concerns, the club acknowledged the issue, with a statement indicating, “The fence was being repaired and fixed today.” The Melbourne Knights organisation has been contacted for further comment regarding the incident and the ongoing safety of their facilities.
Despite the unfortunate injury, the club took to social media to express gratitude for the overwhelming support shown by their fans. A post from the Melbourne Knights read:
“At Tompsett Stadium – the home of the Knights fortress – the passion, the people and the community were on full display, with everyone lifting the club back to where it belongs. We brought back the Melbourne Knights of old! Seeing so many faces – regular and new, young and old – filling the stands and supporting our boys was a night we’ll replay in our heads over and over again.”
The club also extended its thanks to the numerous volunteers who contribute to the club’s operations and concluded their message with a personal note of well wishes: “P.s get back quickly, Darcy.”

The Melbourne Knights boast a rich history within Australian football. Established in 1953 by Croatian immigrants in Sunshine North, Melbourne, the club maintains strong ties to the Croatian Australian community. They are recognised as one of the most successful former clubs in the National Soccer League (NSL), having secured two NSL championships and four premierships during their tenure. The club has also been instrumental in developing prominent Australian football talent, including the renowned Mark Viduka.
Currently, the Melbourne Knights play their home games at Knights Stadium. Following a challenging season that saw them finish last in NPL Victoria in 2025, the club is now competing in the Victorian Premier League 1. The passion displayed by their supporters, as evidenced by the crowd surge, underscores the enduring legacy and fervent following of this historic Australian sporting institution.
