Dorothy Martin, the powerhouse vocalist behind the band DOROTHY, is sharing a deeply personal account of a life-altering event that profoundly reshaped her existence. This “supernatural encounter,” as she describes it, occurred during a tour and not only cemented her faith but continues to be a guiding force in her life and music.
“The genuine spiritual awakening for me happened when I had a supernatural encounter with God on my tour bus back in 2018,” Martin revealed. She recounted a harrowing incident where her tech overdosed on heroin and was clinically dead for a period. In the face of this crisis, Martin rallied the others on the bus, urging them to join hands in prayer. The outcome, she believes, was nothing short of miraculous. “Miraculously, he came back to life. There is no way he should be alive today.”
A Divine Sign and a Renewed Purpose

This extraordinary event unfolded mere hours after Martin had quietly sought a sign from a higher power. “The night before it all went down, I prayed silently in my bunk ‘God if you’re real, please show me,’” she explained. “I believe there are no accidents and the next day I experienced the miracle life-giving power of our creator. Once you have an experience like that it changes you for good. There is nothing anyone can say to me now to convince me there isn’t a higher power. Now it’s all I want to write about!”
This pivotal moment marked a significant turning point in Martin’s spiritual journey, an evolution that would soon become intricately linked with her path to sobriety.
Sobriety, Faith, and the Power of Connection
“Sobriety has given me tools to grow emotionally and spiritually,” Martin reflected. “It has given me a new level of self-awareness and freedom. It has shown me that growing along spiritual lines and helping others is what really matters in life. Most people seem unaware, self-absorbed, and on ‘auto-pilot’ trying to survive, so in that sense I’m grateful my alcoholism has opened the door to a new way of living. It’s given me the keys to a rich and meaningful journey.”

The feelings of isolation often associated with addiction have also been replaced by a profound sense of belonging. “As an alcoholic I’ve always been plagued by feelings of loneliness, feeling ‘apart’ from others,” she admitted. “Recovery and faith has given me human connection and community.”
Following a stint in rehab in 2020, Martin has embraced a disciplined routine of daily practices to maintain her equilibrium.
- Daily prayer and meditation: These practices are fundamental to her well-being.
- Meditating on the word: Engaging with spiritual texts provides guidance and solace.
- Attending meetings: The support and shared experiences within recovery communities are invaluable.
- Staying connected in recovery: Maintaining strong ties with others on a similar journey is crucial.
- Prioritising faith and sobriety: She views these as the cornerstones of her mental and physical health.
Martin is candid about the challenges, acknowledging that relapses are a common part of the recovery process for many. Her message to those struggling is one of hope and resilience: “I want them to know that they don’t have to feel shame or failure, but that they can come back, clean house, and start over.”
Creative Evolution and Enduring Messages
These profound life experiences have not only transformed Martin personally but have also deeply influenced her artistic output. Her music today carries a clear and resonant message.

“My main message to people is to find faith and God,” Martin declared. “I’m not afraid to share my testimony. God saved me and changed my life for the better.”
However, the seasoned rocker has not forgotten the collaborative spirit that has been instrumental in her career. Having had the privilege of working with music icons such as Dolly Parton and Slash, Martin views each collaboration as a valuable learning opportunity.
“When I’m collaborating with someone like Dolly or Slash I try to absorb as much of their experience, strength, and wisdom as possible,” she explained. “Both have been humble and down to earth which is very refreshing and encouraging to a younger artist.”
She fondly recalled working with Parton on a reimagined version of the classic “Two Doors Down.” “With Dolly we did a new rendition of her existing song ‘Two Doors Down’ and I got to sing a part with her in the studio. Macy Gray was also featured.”
Her collaboration with Slash, a longtime friend, was particularly meaningful. “I sent him songs from my album and asked if he would pick one to play guitar on. He chose Tombstone Town and it resulted in a really cool music video. One of my favorites I’ve ever shot.”
Authenticity, Boundaries, and Future Aspirations

Despite the inherent pressures of the music industry, Martin remains steadfast in her commitment to authenticity and her sobriety.
“I trust my intuition and keep a solid team around me,” she stated. “I do my best to operate with integrity and have learned to say no when something is unreasonable. I’ve learned to advocate for myself… Being professional but maintaining good boundaries is important to me.”
Looking ahead, Martin is embracing a more fluid and improvisational creative process as she contemplates her next musical chapter.
“My style and sound have evolved from album to album but there’s always something tying it together,” she shared. “Now I want to get my band into a room and just jam. It’s a free creative space and I love writing that way.”
She envisions a future sonic direction that blends influences: “I’m in this ‘in between’ space where the next album hasn’t quite started taking shape but I’m hoping to go in a more gospel/blues/rock direction.”
Ultimately, Dorothy Martin hopes her story will resonate deeply with her audience, offering a message of hope and empowerment. “I hope my fans take away that their life has meaning and purpose,” she concluded. “I want them to know they matter and that no matter how dark the past has been, they can overcome anything with a little mustard seed of faith.”
