Gout Gout Eyes Revenge on Rival Kennedy at Maurie Plant Meet Amidst Exciting Australian Athletics Scene
Young Australian sprinting prodigy Gout Gout is gearing up for a highly anticipated showdown with fellow countryman Lachlan Kennedy at this year’s Maurie Plant Meet, driven by a desire to avenge last season’s disappointment. The event promises to be a significant highlight on the Australian athletics calendar, particularly as it coincides with the arrival of two American sprinting superstars for the prestigious Stawell Gift.
Both Gout and Kennedy are set to headline an electrifying athletics weekend in Melbourne, having been officially named to compete later this month. Last year, these two formidable sprinters went head-to-head over Gout’s preferred 200-metre distance. However, it was Kennedy who delivered a shock performance, clinching the title in a nail-biting race at Lakeside Stadium, much to the surprise of many spectators.
Gout, now fully focused on redemption, is eager to face his Australian rival over the same distance. “Last year’s meet was fantastic, and the atmosphere down on the track was absolutely incredible,” Gout commented. “I have no doubt it will be just as electrifying this year. Lachie ran brilliantly last year, so I’m definitely out for revenge.”
The 18-year-old has already achieved remarkable feats in his burgeoning career. Last year, he etched his name in the record books by shattering the Australian 200-metre record with an astonishing time of 20.02 seconds. More recently, just last month, he equalled the fastest 100-metre time ever recorded by an Australian on home soil.
Competing at the Dane Bird-Smith Shield Meet at QSAC, Gout clocked an impressive 10.00 seconds with a +0.9 metre per second tailwind. This remarkable performance was achieved with minimal fanfare surrounding his participation in the event.
Gout’s blistering 100-metre run matched the previous best set by Kennedy, who achieved the same mark in April 2025. Hailing from Queensland, the 18-year-old now stands as the third-fastest Australian sprinter in history over the 100 metres. To date, only two Australian men have officially broken the 10-second barrier: Lachlan Kennedy with a legal run of 9.98 seconds, and Patrick Johnson who holds the national record at 9.93 seconds.
Gout’s performance at the Dane Bird-Smith Shield Meet not only secured his qualification for the U-20 World Championships later this year but also positions him strongly to qualify for his favoured 200-metre event at the same prestigious competition.
American Stars Set to Dazzle at Stawell Gift
The presence of Gout and Kennedy at the Maurie Plant Meet comes as a significant boost to Australian athletics, further amplified by the confirmation that American sprint sensation Sha’Carri Richardson will headline the iconic Stawell Gift in Victoria. Richardson, the reigning 100-metre world champion and a silver medallist at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is expected to be a massive drawcard for the popular event.
Adding to the star power, Richardson will be joined in Victoria by her partner and fellow American sprinter, Christian Coleman. The formidable duo were instrumental in the United States’ gold medal victory in the 4×100-metre relay at the Paris Olympics. Coleman, also a world champion in his own right, is anticipated to attract a substantial crowd eager to witness his explosive speed.
While Gout and Kennedy were prominent figures at the Stawell Gift in 2025, the Australian duo are not expected to participate in this year’s meet, which is held in Victoria’s Wimmera region. Their focus will instead be on their respective races at the Maurie Plant Meet, promising a thrilling display of Australian sprinting talent.
