Iniesta Takes First Steps into Management with UAE Club
Spanish football legend Andres Iniesta has officially embarked on his coaching journey, signing with United Arab Emirates second-tier club Gulf United. The move marks a significant transition for the former midfield maestro, who recently retired from his playing career with Emirates Club FC in 2024.
Iniesta, a household name synonymous with both Barcelona and the Spanish national team, holds a coaching license for the second division and is currently working towards obtaining his coveted Pro Coaching Licence. Gulf United confirmed the appointment on Monday, signalling a new era for the club and its burgeoning talent.
Speaking about his new role, Iniesta expressed his profound enthusiasm. “Gulf United FC feels like the perfect place to begin this new chapter,” he stated. “Football has given me everything, and now I want to give something back through coaching, through learning and through daily work with young players who have the hunger and the talent to go far.”
This appointment resonates perfectly with Gulf United’s established reputation for nurturing a strong academy and fostering the development of promising young footballers. Iniesta’s arrival is expected to inject a wealth of experience and a refined footballing philosophy into the club’s coaching structure.
The iconic midfielder elaborated on his vision for player development, highlighting his core principles. “I believe in developing footballers the right way: with patience, with a clear idea of how the game should be played and with genuine care for each individual,” Iniesta explained. “Gulf United shares that philosophy, and that is why I am here.” He further emphasised his personal aspirations, adding, “I want to grow as a coach, gain real experience and earn my Pro Licence.”
Iniesta’s illustrious playing career is etched in the annals of football history. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players to emerge from Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, he went on to make an astounding 674 appearances for the Catalan giants. During his tenure, Iniesta was instrumental in securing nine La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League trophies.
His impact extended far beyond club football, where he played a pivotal role in Spain’s golden generation. He was a cornerstone of the Spanish side that achieved an unprecedented hat-trick of major international tournament victories, triumphing at Euro 2008 and Euro 2012, with the pinnacle being the nation’s first-ever FIFA World Cup title in 2010. It was Iniesta who scored the unforgettable winning goal in the final against the Netherlands, etching his name into global sporting folklore.
