Correctional Deputy Assaulted by Inmate Awaiting Sentencing
TEHAMA COUNTY, CA – A disturbing incident unfolded at the Tehama County Sheriff’s Department, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by correctional staff. During a board of supervisors meeting on Tuesday, Sheriff Dave Kain revealed that a correctional deputy was assaulted on December 14th by inmate Shane Collins. Collins, who has been convicted of elder abuse and assault, is currently awaiting sentencing.
The conviction stems from a June 16th incident where Collins attacked an elder, resulting in the victim losing consciousness. District Attorney Matt Rogers issued a press release on December 11th, indicating that Collins faces a maximum sentence of seven years for these crimes. His sentencing date is scheduled for January 8, 2026.
Sheriff Kain expressed his belief that the attack on the correctional deputy was likely a product of “prison politics.” He elaborated, suggesting that Collins may have attacked the deputy to improve his standing or perception upon entering the state prison system, given the nature of his elder abuse conviction.
“So for no reason whatsoever, other than when he gets to prison to make himself look good, he attacked this correctional deputy,” Sheriff Kain stated to the supervisors and the assembled public. This explanation points to a calculated act by the inmate, rather than a spontaneous outburst.
The assault occurred as the deputy entered a housing unit where Collins was being held. According to Sheriff Kain, the deputy was subjected to multiple blows to the head and body. Fortunately, the deputy was transported to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital, received treatment for his injuries, and has since been released.
In response to this latest incident, Collins will face additional charges, including battery against a custodial officer and resisting an executive officer. Sheriff Kain expressed optimism that these new charges could potentially lead to a “three strikes” case, a legal framework in California that imposes harsher penalties for repeat felony offenders. This development underscores the seriousness with which the Sheriff’s Department is treating the assault.
