Political Tensions Flare in Joypurhat, Leading to Clashes and Injuries
Joypurhat, Bangladesh – A volatile political climate in Joypurhat has resulted in a violent confrontation, leaving at least nine individuals injured. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon in the West Gate area behind Joypurhat Government College, involved supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and an independent candidate.
The injured, identified by their affiliations and residences, are currently receiving medical attention at Joypurhat General Hospital. Among those treated are Al Hamza (31) from Nagarkanda, Faridpur; Tanjid (29), Sohag (24), Rohan (26), and Abdullah (26), all from the Faridpur district headquarters; Toufiq Hossain (27) of Danejpur in Panchbibi upazila; Roman Hossain (39) from the Tajur More area near Joypurhat Sugar Mill; and Rajib Hossain (41) and Al Amin (36) from Shantinagar Mohalla.
According to accounts from local residents and corroborated by police, the unrest erupted around 4:30 PM. The catalyst was the arrival of independent candidate Sabekun Nahar, also known as Shikha, who is campaigning with the horse symbol in the Joypurhat-1 constituency, which encompasses Sadar and Panchbibi upazilas. Ms. Nahar had proceeded to the Government College area accompanied by her supporters.
An immediate escalation of tensions occurred when Ms. Nahar’s entourage encountered supporters of the BNP-nominated candidate, Masud Rana Pradhan, who is running under the paddy sheaf symbol. What began as a verbal dispute quickly devolved into a physical altercation.
Conflicting Accounts Emerge from the Incident
Sabekun Nahar has put forth her version of events, alleging that as she was en route to visit a polling station within the college premises with her relatives and supporters, activists aligned with the paddy sheaf candidate intercepted them. She claims her group was subjected to harassment at the college gate. When her supporters attempted to de-escalate the situation and offer assistance, they were allegedly attacked, resulting in several individuals, including her brother-in-law, sustaining serious injuries.
Conversely, Mamunur Rashid Prodhan, the younger brother of BNP candidate Masud Rana Pradhan and the current president of the district Chhatra Dal (student wing of BNP), presented a different narrative. He accused the independent candidate of orchestrating the situation by bringing in individuals from outside the district, specifically Faridpur, with the alleged intention of engaging in vote-buying activities. According to Mr. Prodhan, when local residents and BNP activists attempted to intervene and question the independent candidate’s actions, her supporters launched an assault on them, leading to injuries among their own ranks.
Medical Status and Official Response
Dr. Rashed Mubarak Jewel, the Superintendent of Joypurhat General Hospital, provided an update on the condition of the injured. He stated that all those who sustained injuries have received initial medical treatment and are currently reported to be out of immediate danger.
Anisur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Joypurhat Sadar Police Station, acknowledged awareness of the incident. However, he noted that as of the time of reporting, no formal complaint had been lodged with the police station regarding the clash. The absence of a formal complaint could impact the initiation of any official investigation into the matter.
The incident highlights the heightened political competition and the potential for unrest in the lead-up to elections in the region.
