Labuan Bridge Project: Hope Rekindled for Island-Mainland Connectivity
Despite being shelved nearly a decade ago, the ambitious plan to construct a bridge connecting Labuan Island to Menumbok on mainland Sabah is experiencing a resurgence of optimism. Labuan MP, Suhaili Abdul Rahman, remains steadfast in his belief that this crucial infrastructure project will eventually materialise, significantly impacting the socio-economic landscape of the region.
Suhaili has indicated that the proposed 17.5-kilometre bridge is “still on Putrajaya’s radar.” He revealed that the Ministry of Works is currently undertaking a study into the project. This follows a similar review initiated in 2018, which was subsequently cancelled by the federal government.
The three-term Member of Parliament recently engaged in discussions with the Chief Minister of Sabah, Hajiji Noor. Both leaders, according to Suhaili, are in complete agreement regarding the necessity and profound benefits the bridge would bring to the people of Labuan and Sabah.
Key Benefits of the Proposed Labuan Bridge:
- Economic Catalyst: The bridge is envisioned to act as a powerful engine for Labuan’s economic growth. By facilitating smoother and more efficient transportation, it is expected to stimulate trade and investment.
- Reduced Cost of Goods: A significant advantage highlighted by Suhaili is the potential for reduced prices of goods on Labuan Island. This is attributed to lower logistics costs associated with land transportation compared to the current reliance on sea freight.
- Enhanced Accessibility: The bridge will drastically improve access to Labuan Island, offering a more convenient and direct route for both residents and visitors.
- Emergency Response Improvement: Crucially, the bridge will significantly enhance emergency response capabilities. Suhaili pointed out the current predicament where patients needing urgent medical attention in Kota Kinabalu must wait for daylight due to the absence of night-time ferry services. This vital connection would eliminate such delays, potentially saving lives.
Suhaili expressed his fervent hope that the bridge project, once officially approved by the government, could be completed within a five-year timeframe.
A Long-Awaited Connection: The History of the Labuan Bridge Proposal
For many years, the call for a bridge linking Labuan to Menumbok has been a recurring theme, driven by the desire to streamline travel, foster economic development, and promote social integration within the region. Currently, individuals travelling between Labuan and Sabah are solely dependent on the ferry service, a mode of transport that can be subject to weather conditions and limited operating hours.
The initial feasibility study for this ambitious project was commissioned by the administration of then-Prime Minister Najib Razak in January 2018. However, this initiative was later discontinued by the Pakatan Harapan government following the political shifts of that year.
Further underscoring the project’s intermittent progress, a RM2.88 million grant that had been allocated to Labuan Corporation for a feasibility study was returned to the Ministry of Finance in October 2024. This action was taken because the proposal had been officially scrapped by the federal government.
Despite these setbacks, the project’s momentum appears to be regaining traction. Labuan Corporation has confirmed that a new study, initiated by the Ministry of Works, commenced in May of the previous year. This ongoing study is anticipated to reach its conclusion in November 2026, potentially paving the way for a renewed push towards the realisation of the Labuan bridge. The renewed focus from the Works Ministry suggests a re-evaluation of the project’s viability and its potential to address the long-standing connectivity challenges faced by Labuan.
