Leclerc: 2026 Regulations Present Ferrari’s “Now or Never” Championship Opportunity
Ferrari Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc has declared that the upcoming 2026 season, marked by a significant overhaul of regulations, represents a critical juncture for the legendary Italian marque. He believes it’s a “now or never” moment for the Scuderia to contend for world championships.
The 2025 campaign proved to be a challenging one for Ferrari. After a promising start that saw them initially occupying second place in the Constructors’ Championship, the team experienced a decline, ultimately slipping to fourth. This downturn was exacerbated by a strategic decision made in April: to divert all aerodynamic development resources towards the car for the following year.
This pivot resulted in a frustrating season for both Leclerc and his new teammate, Lewis Hamilton. Neither driver managed to secure a Grand Prix victory. Hamilton, in particular, endured a difficult year, finishing the season with three consecutive early exits from qualifying in Q1.
Amidst mounting scrutiny in Italy, directed at both the team and its principal, Fred Vasseur, Leclerc is acutely aware of the pressure. He acknowledges that the strategic choices made by Ferrari mean the team must deliver under the new regulations. For Leclerc, who has been patiently awaiting a championship-contending car since 2019, the stakes are exceptionally high.
When questioned about his continued belief in Ferrari’s ability to provide him with a title-winning machine, Leclerc responded with conviction. “I do, and next year will be a crucial year,” he stated. “The whole team is hugely motivated for next year, because it’s such a big change, a huge opportunity to show what Ferrari is capable of. It’s now or never, so I really hope that we will start this new era on the right foot, because it’s important for the four years after.”
He further elaborated on the timeline for understanding the competitive landscape, suggesting, “By race six or seven, I think we’ll have a good idea of who are the teams that will be dominating for the four years after.”

Reflecting on his winless 2025 season, Leclerc described it as “tough.” While he admitted he doesn’t dwell on negative emotions for extended periods, he unequivocally labelled the season as “very disappointing.”
Despite the team’s performance, Leclerc has been recognised as one of the standout drivers of 2025, alongside Mercedes’ George Russell. Both drivers, in similar circumstances at their respective teams, finished the season in fourth and fifth place respectively, excluding the championship protagonists.
“I rate my season actually high,” Leclerc commented at the Las Vegas Grand Prix last month. “I think I’ve done a good job. But again, there are always things that you can do better. I think the first year it was very clear what my weaknesses were, but then you work on them and you always focus on smaller and smaller details. And now it’s smaller details, but it still makes the difference. So that’s what I will focus on.”
Key Considerations for Ferrari’s 2026 Challenge:
- Regulation Overhaul: The 2026 season introduces entirely new technical regulations, offering a significant reset for all teams. This presents a prime opportunity for teams like Ferrari to close the gap or even surge ahead if they adapt more effectively than their rivals.
- Strategic Resource Allocation: Ferrari’s decision to focus development on the 2026 car from April 2025 onwards signals a clear commitment. However, it also implies a willingness to sacrifice immediate performance for long-term gain. The success of this strategy will be paramount.
- Driver Line-up: The combination of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton is one of the most potent driver pairings on the grid. Their experience, talent, and motivation will be crucial in extracting the maximum performance from the new machinery.
- Team Principal’s Vision: Fred Vasseur faces considerable pressure to deliver results. His leadership and ability to foster a winning culture within the team will be tested as Ferrari navigates this critical period.
- Leclerc’s Development: Leclerc’s self-assessment highlights his continuous drive for improvement. His focus on refining “smaller details” suggests a mature approach to his craft, essential for sustained championship challenges.
The coming years will undoubtedly be a defining period for Ferrari. The Scuderia’s ability to capitalise on the 2026 regulations will determine whether they can return to the pinnacle of Formula 1 and fulfil Leclerc’s championship aspirations. The “now or never” sentiment underscores the urgency and importance of this transitional phase for the iconic Italian team.
