A Young Boy’s Freedom: From a Cage to a New Beginning
For seven agonizing years, a nine-year-old boy named Mwiti endured a life of confinement, relegated to a small, cage-like enclosure. This tragic situation, stemming from deep-seated misconceptions held by his guardians about his behaviour, has finally come to an end thanks to the intervention of compassionate individuals.
Mwiti, who was abandoned by his biological mother at just one year old, faced significant developmental challenges. He struggled with fundamental milestones such as walking and speaking. His confinement meant that his world was limited to crawling within the confines of the cage and receiving sustenance through a small opening.

The Roots of Confinement: Misunderstanding and Harsh Realities
The reasons behind Mwiti’s seven-year imprisonment are rooted in a tragic misunderstanding. According to his grandmother, Stella Kathure, the confinement began when Mwiti was approximately two years old. At that time, he reportedly exhibited violent tendencies, which his grandmother attributed to the harsh living conditions and the frequent domestic disputes between herself and her husband, Joseph Murungi.
The belief that his behaviour was a sign of an untreatable condition led his guardians to isolate him, inadvertently exacerbating his developmental struggles.
A Beacon of Hope: Intervention and Rescue
A turning point arrived with the intervention of well-wishers, spearheaded by activist Supuu O Mioro. Recognizing the dire circumstances, Mioro and his team swiftly acted to rescue Mwiti, arranging for his immediate transfer to a medical facility for comprehensive assessment and care.
Speaking about the situation, Supuu O Mioro revealed that Mwiti’s guardians had fundamentally misdiagnosed his condition, mistaking his developmental delays for a disability. He emphasized that Mwiti’s inability to speak was a direct consequence of his isolation and lack of interaction. “It is their isolation that made the boy fail to speak. It is not autism as such. Nobody was talking to him, so it was hard to learn,” Mioro explained.
Remarkable Progress: A New Chapter Unfolds
The impact of specialized care and a nurturing environment has been nothing short of remarkable. After less than a week of dedicated assessment and treatment, reports indicate that Mwiti has made significant strides. He can now walk independently and manage his own hygiene, including visiting the toilet without assistance.

The process of re-socialization and habit formation is ongoing, with specialists working to instill healthy routines. The hope is that within three months, with continued evaluation and support, Mwiti will begin to develop his speech. A school in Karen has graciously offered to provide him with specialized training to aid in his verbal development. Upon his recovery and readiness, Mwiti is slated to reside at the Shalom Children’s Home, where he will receive ongoing care from Father Gaciata Francis.
A Nation’s Gratitude: The Power of Collective Support
The outpouring of support for Mwiti has been immense, with Kenyans from all walks of life rallying to contribute to his well-being. Supuu O Mioro expressed profound gratitude for the solidarity shown by the public during Mwiti’s critical time. This collective effort has not only facilitated Mwiti’s rescue and recovery but has also ignited a wave of thankfulness and admiration for those who championed his cause.
The transformation of Mwiti’s life has resonated deeply with many, sparking heartfelt messages of appreciation directed towards Supuu O Mioro and all those who contributed to this positive outcome.
