Tragedy on the Kings Highway: Three Dead in Horrific Head-On Collision
A devastating head-on collision on the Kings Highway in southern New South Wales has claimed the lives of three people and left four others in hospital. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene near Monga, approximately 42 kilometres north-west of Batemans Bay, late yesterday afternoon following reports of a severe crash.
The accident, which occurred just after 5pm, involved two vehicles. According to Inspector Will Collins of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, initial investigations suggest that a sedan veered into the incorrect lane, resulting in a catastrophic head-on impact with an oncoming hatchback. “It appears that the sedan has crossed onto the incorrect side of the road and struck the hatchback,” Inspector Collins stated. “What caused that manoeuvre is going to form part of the police investigation.”
The force of the impact was immense, described by Inspector Collins as a “head-on impact at 100-kilometres an hour.” The vehicles were left “extremely badly damaged,” and the scene was “very confronting” for all involved.
Victims and Survivors
Tragically, three individuals travelling eastbound in the hatchback sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. These victims have been identified as a 38-year-old female driver, her 19-year-old female passenger, and a male passenger in the rear seat, who is yet to be formally identified.
A 15-year-old female passenger, also from the hatchback, was airlifted to Canberra Hospital with critical injuries and was undergoing surgery. Inspector Collins emphasised the profound and lasting impact of such events, noting, “Life altering things happen in seconds and there’s obviously a number of families who are never going to recover from what happened yesterday.”
The occupants of the westbound sedan have all been taken to hospital. This included a 39-year-old male driver, who was flown to Westmead Hospital with serious injuries and underwent surgery. A seven-year-old child was transported to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a stable condition, while a three-year-old child was taken to Canberra Hospital as a precautionary measure. Police have confirmed that all individuals involved in the crash are residents of the ACT and Queanbeyan areas.
Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact
The Monaro Police District has established a crime scene, and specialist officers from the Southern Regional Crash Investigation Unit are leading the investigation into the cause of the collision. The Kings Highway, a vital route connecting the coast to Canberra, was reopened early this morning, though clean-up crews remained at the site throughout the morning.
Inspector Collins acknowledged the distress experienced by emergency responders and the public who stopped to assist. “Any scene of that magnitude is distressing,” he commented. “Not only for the emergency services who have to respond to it, but there were multiple members of the public who stopped to render aid.”
NSW Premier Chris Minns described the incident as “devastating for the community” and “very traumatic for the people who are involved.” He added, “We’ve got three families that will be affected for the rest of their lives as a result of this accident.”
Road Safety Concerns and a Plea for Information
The Premier also highlighted the critical need for information to prevent future tragedies. “If there’s dash-cam footage, please provide that to NSW police, it’s critical in terms of their investigation,” Mr Minns urged. “We need to find out what happened and do everything we can to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
This latest tragic event brings the total number of road fatalities in NSW this year to 68, a significant increase compared to the 46 recorded at the same point last year. The timing of the accident, occurring at the end of a long weekend in the ACT, underscores the importance of road safety on key arterial routes like the Kings Highway.
